The Smileys, that rad couple that's trying to be the first people to ever climb all 50 climbs in 50 Classic Climbs of North America just opened up a kickstarter page to help get them through the rest of their project. They've climbed 36 of the 50, and have 8 in their sights to finish off next year.

Here's their kick starter page if you have some spare dineros and want to help them accomplish something really cool, a real history-in-the-making opportunity:

You should too. Get on it!

They are giving back to society in the form of inspiration... and that is worth something in my book. Dreams and big goals are contagious. And their goal is one big mofo goal. Hummingbird Ridge is the crux, no doubt.

bumpity-bump for the Smileys. They're great people and pushing themselves hard to do something pretty cool...and trying to share it with folks as much as they can. Who wants to hate on that?

Nobody's forcing a contribution outta ya anyway. =)

The Smileys' goal seems inspiring and admirable, but I could be a lot more inspired to donate if their kickstarter page was setup in a way that looked less like 'give us money to climb awesome things you wish you had time/money to climb' and more like 'invest in our production'.

The way to set this up is to crowd source production of a movie based on these climbs, where the investors (kickstarter donors) own a % of the copyright proportional to the amount donated, just like a traditional movie production. In a normal deal, it's something like ~70% rights ownership to investors, with ~30% to the talent (the Smileys).

12 Days left and they're a little less than halfway. If anyone wants to do some cool giving in the spirit of Christmas I bet they'd sure appreciate it.

Merry X-mas everyone!

No one has ever climbed all 50 before now? that suprises me for some reason... I suppose it's a huge task financially and logistically but damn I just figured with all the motivated climbers out there...

There are several reasons why giving them money seems ridiculous to me:

1. They seem perfectly capable of working and saving money on their own, like most people that want to take climbing trips but aren't sponsored at a high level. Why are they in such a hurry to complete their goal, they've got decades to climb all these routes.

2. They're paying for flights in to their objectives, which are extremely expensive. With a little groveling, they could save a ton of money. Why are they in such a hurry?

3. There are hundreds of more worthy charities, if not thousands, that I could theoretically give my extra money to.

4. I would rather spend money on my selfish hobbies (ie climbing trips) than someone elses.

I agree with user MorganH. This couple needs to learn a thing or two from Fred Beckey like trying to write a book or two to raise money. Does anyone see Fred Beckey boasting about all the climbs he has done. If we should donate money to anyone it should be Fred! ha ha

Interesting that climbers would be willing to give up their hard earned cash so a couple of mediocre climbers can complete some ridiculous list. Yeah, I'm thinking that I'll be donating my dollars to a more worthy cause. Like maybe a new Big Bro.

You mean they really think someone hasn't climbed all of them already? Really?

No one person has yet climbed all fifty routes. This has been attributed to the difficulty of some of the Alaskan and Canadian routes (the Hummingbird Ridge of Mount Logan has never been repeated by the original route[8]) and the fact that one of the routes (Shiprock) is closed to climbing, and contemporary ascents are illegal. In 2010, professional climbers Mark and Janelle Smiley announced their intent to attempt to climb all fifty, including Shiprock, "with the Navajo Nation's permission".

Wow. And the ladies they ran into didn't know what route they were on either?

kind of funny that the petit is #17 on the list of completed,
and they didn't remove it off the site.

i don't want to bust on them, they seem like great people.
they should fix that, it is obviously zowie...

makes for a good spoof though. did they do that route on april 1st?

;)

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
