Climbing near North Bend, OR?
|
I am moving out to North Bend, Oregon in a couple of months and was wondering if there is any climbing nearby? I have never even been to Oregon, and it looks like Smith is about 4 hours away. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! |

shit. |

There is some stuff around Medford I think. But Smith will definitely be the best bet. Well worth the drive. |

This is probably not the best forum to inquire in. I don't have any experience climbing in that part of Oregon but would be pretty surprised if there wasn't anything within 1-2 hours. Oregon's littered with little local's crags of varying quality. One that comes to mind that I've never been to is the Callahans (steep, bolted sandstone 2 hours? away) but I bet there are others closer. I'd ask around cascadeclimbers. (where you'll definitely find some headcases, but they'll be knowledgeable headcases) |

Thanks a lot!! I appreciate the info, checking out cascadeclimbers now |

I grew up inland of where you are talking about. Locals starved for rock might call Acker Rock or the Callahans climbing but don't expect too much. The only real climbing anywhere close by is Smith Rock. |

If you like slab/friction then you will love both Acker and the Callahans. Bunch of other stuff down there too but as stated this wouldn't be the best place to get beta on local crags in OR. Check out the Orton Guidebook for that part of the state. |

There is excellent climbing 30 minutes from both. edit: NM, you do mean North Bend Oregon. Good luck. |

The only real climbing anywhere close by is Smith Rock. There is quite a lot of established routes at both of those. I don't know the totals but you couldn't climb every route at Acker in a solid week of climbing. If I were in North Bend I'd head to the Callahans first then Acker. |

And it would take you weeks if not months to climb everything at the Callahans. Also down that way is Rattlesnake Rock, The Rabbit Ears, etc, etc. Lots of little crags hidden out in the woods and you can be sure the locals know of several more that are not on the intardwebz or in a guidebook. |
