Angela, to learn to climb, you need to get an experienced climber to mentor you or hire a guide service. Don't try to learn to climb from the Internet (MP). Tahquitz and Joshua Tree are world-class climbing areas in southern California.
pointer: start bouldering, you should be able to hop on boulders with other people if you just show up to climbing areas as long as you have your own shoes and chalk (doesn't hurt you're a gal, guys are often standoffish/territorial like doggies). When you transition to rope climbing, the cruxes, though high in the air, may seem easier compared to the technical moves of most boulder problems. And read into good anchors and proper belay if you don't already know, blind faith with 'climbers' is never a good idea, use personal risk management.
