What's the deal with camping back in the canyons? Specifically in Black Velvet Canyon. I'm planning for a trip sometime next year where a friend and I would like to take a week's provisions and get dropped off. We'd like to stay back there and get on a bunch of the long routes. Tent-to-tent style.
Not allowed really. I mean you can camp above 5000' with a permit, but does not help you with what you want to do. 702-515-5050. Doubt if you would get by with it for a week with full on tents and supplies.
Camping is legal above 5000' with a permit obtained in the same manner as a late exit. Overnight permits can be obtained for certain routes accessed via the Scenic Drive, which of course does not include BVC. What I'm saying is that your proposal is somewhat unlikely to occur in a legal manner. Feel free to PM BLM Red Rock to clarify, that's Nick the Climbing Lead, in case I am incorrect. In general, the days of unregulated access to RR died somewhere around the time Vegas grew to an urban area of 1.7M with the accompanying problems. Should you choose to disregard regulations, please be discreet so as not to fuck up access for everyone. Hope that helps.
Different perspective - but haven't tried this - maybe some of you have. I serilously doubt law enforcement has been much past trailhead enforcing this. If you set up advaced base camp in Black Velvet - somewhere below Ephinephrine or the sport climbs in there, is law really going to catch onto this?
