Knee pads are a ridiculous and probably ineffective way to protect oneself from the consequences of a fall on this pitch!

You are obviously NOT a golfer...

I don't know, the knee pads made sense to me when I first saw this. Didn't Ammon use them in similar context on "Wings of Steel"? Why not add some elbow pads too? Or maybe a motorcycle racing suit instead...

I can't think of anything, short of decking, that scares me more than long slab falls.

I fell 40 feet at Stone Mountain a few years ago. Neither of my knees touched the rock and I don't think I'd have had time to think "OK, slide on the kneepads" if I had been wearing them.

In fact, if you stay under control and relax, falling on a slab as blank as what you find at Stone is not nearly as bad as one might think. All I had to do is get my shoes resoled and take a week or so off to let my hand (singular) heal from the road rash.

I was even able to finish the pitch, bloody hand and all (in the snow I might add).

yes the knee pads were a ridiculous accessory to wear on this lead! G Money does what he wants to do.
