was thinking about heading to escalante canyon this weekend.trying to decide on the type of vehicle. does one need a high clearance vehicle or can one get by with just a standard passenger car? please advise.
If the road is in the usual condition, you can easily get by with a passenger car. Depending on your destination, though, you can expect to hike a bit further than if you had a high clearance 4WD. Perhaps substantially further. There are some fair-sized ruts, occasionally, so don't go too fast. The road is usually a nice graded road that's in good shape. If you're heading very far down the fifty-mile road, and the weather looks rainy, consider heading out, or you might be in for an adventure.
Like the others said you can get in to the major trail heads with a car usually dependent on recent washouts. One thing to keep in mind, if you go in a car it will take you a couple hours to get down that road. Ive done it in an accord and a Toyota matrix and the washboards are just to bad to go fast over without feeling like your car is gonna fall apart. Ive also been down it in a Xterra and we pretty much floated over the washboards so we did it much faster. Also, I have had to walk long distances cross country when we could not get the car to the right TH so keep that in mind. The ranger station in town will probably have a good idea of the conditions of the road to each TH so check with them 1st. If you are heading down Coyote Gulch or the dry for slots (spooky,Peekaboo) you will most likely be fine, and if your TH is on the main road you will most likely be fine unless its way down towards the end. How many days do you have, and have you picked an agenda yet? Have fun, that's a great area!
