Horrible news

It's with great sadness and a heavy heart that I'm making this post. I'm looking at all angles, all possibilities, and there just isn't another possibility. You guys might want to sit down for this.

I've lost nearly 10 lbs and all I cut was beer.

Background, just so you know the basics.

I'm a skinny guy, always have been. Waist size 28 since high school. I'm 33 now and that hasn't changed. I weighed 128 for my first Ironman. I never got over 135 during the time I raced bikes. I grazed 140 for about 3 years, when I moved to Bermuda, I got up to 150-152.

None of this ever worried me, I was climbing fine, still improving, and my 28" pants still fit. I might not have worn my belt as often but it was no big deal.

After the wall went out of business in December, I decided to travel. First stop, Thailand. Super hot, spicy food, and diarrea. I came back ripped and tan but at about 149. I had a Chang-over for a month though, I never even considered dry days.

Back in the states, I went to T-wall then the Red. Nearly daily climbing for 6 weeks. It made me fitter on the rock than I'd ever been. My weight, 146-148. I was killing a 30 of PBR every 4-5 days. Again, no worries, everything was working.

After the New, Ontario, Bermuda, and the Gunks, I ended my roadtrip. 146lbs.

I'm in Cheyenne, chilling at the parents house while a work permit gets processed. I'm climbing 3 days a week (I've been doing 5 since December). I'm not dieting and my sugar intake is about the same (a little too high). What has changed though, is that my parents don't drink. Not a drop, never have. When I am there, neither do I. I do have the occasional with my friends. I estimate that my beer intake has gone from 30 a week to 2.

Today is 7 weeks after I finished the trip, I weigh 138. Some mornings it's 137.

I've watched it melt off steadily, changing nothing but my beer intake. I wanted to blame it on elevation but that's probably only 1 lb. It's not the approaches either, I only climb Vedauwoo now, it's like 10 minutes of walking. It's not the physical nature of the climbs, I've been avoiding the offwidths.

Just something to keep in mind. Simply cutting beer dropped a huge amount of weight for me and it did it fast.

I feel stupid for not realizing this before. A single PBR has 144 calories. Multiply that by 30. That's 4320 calories a week I'm no longer taking in.

Tilt em back boys, just remember that it gets carried up the rock.

Given the choice between weighing 138 pounds and not drinking any beer, and weighing 150 pounds and drinking beer... I can conclude that most people will choose to drink beer.

Why drink 30 PBRs a week though? Why not just buy a 6er or 12er of really good beer, and enjoy what you drink in smaller amounts? Thats what I do, and I'm much happier.

BTW - I used to weigh 165ish because of beer, with a 34inch waist, and now am down to about 140-145 depending on my last trip to drop the kids off at the pool. And I still drink GOOD beer.]

You CAN have the best of both choices....

hmm... I switched to just keeping wine at home instead of beer, for dieting reasons. But shit, one glass of red still has 125 kcal. That comes to like 1700 kcal a week, at two glasses a night.

Vodka's only 55kcal/shot, though.

i have been sadly realizing this too. i have gained about 10 lbs since i quit smoking a year ago, and now i try to have less beer than i used to so i can maintain my weight at 188. otherwise i could be 200lbs easy.
my climbing schedule hasn't really changed, if anything its more (2-3 days outside / 2 nights at rock gym)

Because PBR is really good beer. Just b/c something is expensive it doesnt' make it good. PBR won the Great American Lager in 2006 so it isn't just red neck dirt bag beer. I know a brew master for a large micro-brew in CO and if he isn't drinking his own stuff he drinks PBR. If you don't like it that is a personal choice.

Besides, a 30 pack of PBR is $16. At a little more then $.50 a beer it is hard to beat.

And for all the tree huggers, glass bottles cost more to ship (due to weight), costing more in fuel and thus a greater carbon imprint.

Same experience recently, went from 160 to 146 without really changing my workout regime, and possibly eating more, over seven months with very reduced beer intake. I was not trying to lose weight, and actually had not stepped on a scale during that whole time, until a week ago, and I was completely surprised.

If you like it, more power to you, but it's nothing more than an adjunct lager. And while it might hold its own against the rest of the macro's, it's still a shit beer. And that fact that you know brew master who drinks it says more about him than should be posted publicly.

This guy is an imposter, no way he is a climber.

the answer is Natty Light... 95 cals, 3.2g carbs, $16.99/30

Lemme get one thing straight. I knock back the PBR too, I'm not picky when it comes to beer. "Beer is good. Beer is good. AND STUFF"

I just prefer stout.

Life is too short to drink cheap beer.

It's served mostly around your finer bridge abutments.

Which costs more to ship: A can of PBR from Milwaukee to Portland, or a bottle of Bridgeport IPA from Portland to Portland? Buy local :)

Also, by switching to glass bottles, the increase in exercise you would get from transporting and curling the extra weight might offset the caloric intake (at least a little).
