What's Boulder, CO really like?

David Rivers · · Unknown Hometown · Joined Sep 2008 · Points: 20

A quick search of Colproperties.com shows that there are 226 properties in Boulder for sale between $89,000 and 250,000. Yes the vast majority are condos, but who wants to mow the lawn when there are so many other things to do outside.

Interesting chart of real estate prices from this Eric and Lucie post.

It seems like a straightforward and undeniable fact (like say, the existence of gravity) that real estate is expensive in Boulder. That is not a judgement or a criticism, it just happens to be true.

Arguments of "No dude, you can get in under $600K" don't convince me otherwise. For some reason some people seem compelled to say it really isn't that bad.

Well, it really is what it really is.

Nobody says you have to buy. I still say, rent a cheap place in a nice Boulder neighborhood so you can bike to work, and you will be happy as a clam. Assuming clams are happy, I guess.

a bunch of whiners!

boulder, like any town, is what you make of it. you will find your clique of people, screw the rest! if they're jerks...don't hang out with 'em. the proximity to fun outdoor things is what makes boulder a hub for the outdoor-driven. the fact that you can ski in the morning, run laps in eldo in the afternoon and drink delicious beer with like-minded people in the evening is what makes people love this town.

as to the "expensive" cost of living here, HA. my rent has gotten cheaper every year i've lived here (7 going on 8)...ya i had to search for it and live in some not-pristine houses (in college) but i can still BIKE to work and the grocery almost every day (because I still live IN-TOWN). OH-Ya, don't forget about Boulder Affordable Housing. Friends of mine recently bought a townhome in N Boulder for 150k....down from 450k all thanks to Affordable Housing.

so to all you haters, keep on hatin' and go somewhere else, because I live in the Bubble...and it rocks.

I'm confused dude! What did you mean by this? Do you know where I can find some tasty fried chicken in Boulder besides King Soopers? The only two places I've found fried chicken in this state is at King Soopers and Chic-Fil-A in Westminster. Sometimes I long to quit my job as a structural engineer and open up a Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ‘n Biscuits right in the middle of Pearl Street!

Richard- checkout coloproperties.com/ . According to the site there are 1242 properties for sale in Boulder and vicinity. The highest priced one is $7,890,000 and the lowest $72,841 for a permanently affordable unit. Median price is below 500K (1/2 above, 1/2 below).

My wife and I have owned in Boulder since 1998. We are both teachers, and I was a produce guy until 2003, so it's not like we're made of $. We've always owned in nice neighborhoods-King's Ridge, Table Mesa, NoBo by Parkside Park, and back to King's Ridge. Never payed over $350,000. None of the places were total fixers (Table Mesa house had some dated features, but was very livable, and I'm a handy guy who like projects, also rented the basement 5 of 7 years to help cover mortgage, while I was in school and starting teaching). The current place is an 1800 sq ft 3 level townhouse on the bike paths 10 leisurely minutes from the BRC (or Movement, CATS, if you prefer). That's more than enough space for 2 humans and 2 canines.

Anyone know of a good fried chicken joint in Denver? I've sampled many, but none really supplants the Col.
The best fried chicken I've found in the state is Slogar in Crested Butte.

Was Joseph's also in Five Points? I went to a divey place down there years ago that had great fried chicken, but couldn't find it again when I recently got the cravin'

The Popeye's on Colfax is decent, Church's on Colorado is better, but for some nasty ass reason I still like the Col.s' original.

Slogar is amazing. This was in the paper the other day: dailycamera.com/food/ci_184…

Boulder is a really expensive place to live and there are a bunch of hippy liberal want a be's aside from that. It's an amazing climbing community, and some of the best concentration of diverse rock and access to some of the best climbing in the world.

My opinion.

What David Rivers said about housing.

If you want a 4,000 sq ft house up against the foothills it will cost you a few million. My husband and I lived in a 1,600 sq ft townhouse-style condo in central Boulder (walking and biking distance to most everywhere) for 29 years, did a lot of upgrades, and recently sold it for $360k -- probably $20k less than we could have gotten for it at the height of the bubble. The owners have always included young professionals.

So excited! Just found out that I'll be interviewing in Boulder on the 29th and 30th! Hoping to be there from 27th-30th. Now the really important question - with so little time what are the must dos while I'm there (climbing and in the city)?

Must dos in Boulder in August? Leave Boulder and climb in Estes Park or RMNP. ;-)

Lauren,

Estes and RMNP are great but won't give you the Boulder beta. Climb in the mornings (I'm starting to feel the crisp in the mornings now and quit before 1:00) then hit the town in the afternoon. That way you'll experience both ends of the spectrum.

You didn't say what kind/difficulty you're looking for. Post that request and you'll get tons of recommendations. Do you need a partner?

Best,
Mal

By and large, self-absorbed Yuppies are just flat-out irritating. As with all irritants, the concentration ratio to normal people determines the level of irritation. Marin County, CA., for example has a high yuppie/regular person ratio. The good news is that by concentrating them in places like Boulder means they are less prevalent elsewhere. It also means we know where to go find them when the shit finally hits the fan.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
