1) Trying to say Lee is not a local is just stupid.
2) The low ball bouldering thread was just silly.
3) Decking from 20 feet is just painful.

according to the original poster it is as we're east of the mississippi fuckface. =)

(the last part was added to prove the uptight assholeness of Chicagoans)

And in reality it should be east or west of the Missouri River as well. Partly because they got it wrong in the first place. But when you are there in South Dakota the difference between east river and west river is like night and day.

Hey man, Lee's definitely a Rumney local.

Lee's so local the he gets bored with Rumney classics and he seeks out obscure, no-star, moss piles to climb.

Lee's so local that while he's at work he makes maps of Rumney areas, and fills them in with information about obscure, no-star, moss piles.

Lee's so local that he is the only person I know who actually enjoyed climbing Mercury.

Lee's so local that he's put up boulder problems on the rocks submerged in water at the swimming area.

Lee's so local that he has the super-secret local beta for Suburban.

I could go on, but you get the idea...

haha thanks jay, you say the sweetest things :)

as for localism, pardon me but i honesty thought it was agreed that it was about how often you climbed somewhere and if you were part of the community... i wont list out my credentials since jay had it perfect...

anyway mike, by my definition if you climb often in N Conway and are part of the community then you are a local there (congrats!)... and as a random guy on the internet i wouldnt try to take that from you :)

Well...I guess it depends on how you define the word. What is the "checklist" to define "local"? I don't have any firm opinion on that.
I have lived here for a year but would feel uncomfortable calling myself a "local". I was thinking of it along the lines as many who live in, lets say...Worcester, MA but state that their from Boston. First to consider is the amount of time in local area...How connected one is, who do you know? Are they only a certain person, group of people, or Family?
Do you know the name of a mailman, gas attendant, school teacher, etc.?
Then how would one measure the weight of each of these factors. What is the Control Group and who chooses the Control Group. How did this person gain the status to make such a decision?
Does any of this really matter? Etc. Etc.

Population density would have to be considered too.
Anyways...it's clear you are viewed as local

Dear Mike,

Let it go. Low-ball bouldering doesn't need you to defend it and your "contributions" to the Rumney section were lame.

Sincerely,

Pretty Much Everyone

Edit: Yeah I saw that post you deleted beforehand.

JSH wrote: I think the relevant idea here is that of a *climbing* local. For that, it seems to be widely held that a local is someone who knows the (climbing) area very, very well and who is emotionally vested in the area. Locals have been climbing there for a while and will continue as long as they live. Locals know the history of the area, and its customs and ethics. They're well-connected personally, probably on a first-name basis in the climbing shop. It's the locals who replace old tat and unsafe hardware, out of love for an area. It's the locals who maintain trails and seek out new routes and areas just to share. This is, of course, in contrast to the typical uptight (see? not a tangent!) New England definition of local, by which your grandfather had to have been the mayor or somesuch. Otherwise you're just a newcomer. Check the contributions on his page - Lee is about as local as one can be to Rumney, and the area is better for him.
I'd agree

Rumney locals who do not live within 30 miles of the place - members of 'Team Tough' (you know who you are). I salute you for all you have contributed to the place and your continuing involvement. And, yes, I do think they are uptight, but strictly limited to the quality and cleanliness of the many routes they have put up and/or equipped over the years. Many, many thanks!

I do shit pebbles, but it has nothing to do with religion. It's a medical condition, it's personal, and I don't want to talk about it.

I'm actually not religious at all, and I do agree that a lot of the beliefs of Mormonism are strange. However, that doesn't mean all Mormons are nuts. Some of the best people I know are mormon. And some of the worst people I've ever met have also been mormon. It takes all kinds.

I just think people shouldn't be dicks to each other. I know, weird.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
