Climbing shorts with built in harness

I'm impressed that literally any brain fart can make all the way to the store front. And here I am still trying to patent my retractable rope-n-a-box idea.

When I was in the Army they issued us belts with an integrated steel gate to use as a rappel harness. Not exactly comfy to rap in but it got the job done and eliminated the need to carry a harness when we didn't need one 99.9% of the time. I see this as serving a similar function but honestly I think the belt is a better idea as it takes up negligible weight and bulk when used as a belt and not a harness. While i can't see myself ever needing this i'd be curiousto hear how much weight it adds and how comfortable they are to use.

I actually do this already by putting my harness on and then putting on my shorts; it is super convenient beause I can just un-zip my fly and thread the rope in to tie in. I also get a kick out of people freaking out when I am belaying without any apparent tie-in point.

That gives me another good idea: I am going to start putting my gear sling on before my shirt to keep the gear from clanking and hanging up on stuff!

Maybe they were thinking hollywood and stunt work?

It might be really comfortable but I wonder about the longevity. I go through about 3-4 pairs of pants/shorts a year and keep harnesses for 2-3.

I'm also a little concerned about the longevity and premature wearing of this equipment through washing, but I do see this as a great way to protect modesty. I'm an easy going guy, but I could see some of my more conservative friends having an issue with how tight climbing harnesses tend to accentuate both mens' and women's bodies in ways that they may be religiously against. This might be a good alternative, especially for use in the gym!

Rossignol Europe has been making a ski pant with a sewn in harness very similar to this but just a big tie in loop at the waste that is always available. Technical gore tex ski pant.

It has been out for about 3 years or so now, I laughed at first, but If you ski full time in Europe it makes sense. Or for Heli Guides up north, Canada and Alaska. Would be great for slednecks that insist on driving their machines over air as well. In Europe we are in Harnesses about 90% of the time while skiing it seems. (well I am at least) I don't think the pant will ever take off or have it's place in the states, but if you are skiing in Cham or La Grave all season it makes sense. Constantly skiing on glaciers, and arriving to rappels on a daily basis. Seems we take belays too when we least expect it.

Yeah this short is a gimmic but it does have it's place and as soon as there are more fashionable, and sophisticated choices, I would consider it's application. It would be nice to see it come in a low cut 70's style, nylon running short.
