Unfortunately I don't have a scale this week since I am traveling, but i climbed a bunch of 14ers and didn't eat badly so i am sure i lost a pound or two. i'll check in for two weeks when i am home again next monday.

very inspirational, I'm from Oz, I came and lived in maryland / DC back in 2004 when I was 46 and dropped from 185 to 170 lbs (cycling 45 to and from climbing gym, and a hard-arse wife controlling my beer) and i was probably climbing the best ever, I onsighted 20 5.12's one october and thought they were soft. I came back 4 years and 20lbs heavier and couldn't get to the 2nd bolt of many of them.

Now after a 3 year elbow problem (pain inside and outside, on each elbow, probably from putting up too many multipitch sport climbs) I climb in bits and have ballooned to 200 lbs (5'11") and should take a stand on my weight now.

Besides, I still want to be climbing when i'm 70. And it's got to be easier on the body at 180 lbs - my new target.

I'm still on track - lost another pound and did my lunchtime workout 4 days. Increased my situps to 130. Started using the calorie counter site that someone else posted (thanks) so I'm more aware of what I'm eating & how much. So I'm down 8 lbs. and feeling a little less flabby. Psyched to keep losing pounds, a great day of climbing yesterday has got me even more motivated to get in shape.

Ok, I'm currently working on losing weight also. I'll chime in with what works for me, in case any others want to add it to their program.

The only method that works for me is to keep a food log and count calories every day. 2000 is my limit, and no evening beer/snacks if I'm over it for the day. Results in about a pound or so a week if I stay honest and allow one day over (not binge, but can go over). I have tried other exercise based programs, and just 'eat lightly', and such with no real effect. YMMV, but that's my experience.

Did it 9 years ago to drop from 199 (the idea of 200 scared me into it) to 180 and started again in March to try to get from 183 to 160. I'm currently at 169 and really sick of doing it. But just a couple more months to go if I don't go backwards any more like I did on a trip this summer :P

So, 169 for me, target is 160, and 1 pound/week.

Loved this thread, but of course I don't fit into the normal "Extra Weight" climber category, more of the Fatty McFat Fat Climber. I am 6'2" 280lbs, fattest climber I know. I love climbing, and love food and beer... who doesn't right? I just need to get motivated because I can't imagine how much more fun climbing would be if I was 80lbs less, but mmmm beer, she will be hard to give up, or tone back.

Alright. Guess it's time to represent. I too have been struggling with putting on the pounds with turning the 'middle-age' corner. Have put on 15 lbs in the last two years, and aiming to take those back off. I know exactly what caused the increase--dropping down from climbing 4 days a week to maybe 1 or 2 if I'm lucky. My partner/husband started back to school, so my favorite climbing partner is now less available. So with the drop in climbing came a general slow down in all activity. Result = +15 lbs.

What I'm doing: Been hiking a 3 mile trail (1200 ft elevation gain) 2-3x/week. Bike to work, though only a 5 mile R/T. And trying to at least hit the climbing gym 2x/week. Replaced all lunches with salad/veggies/something healthy. And trying to monitor my dinner portion sizes. Been doing this for the last month. Result: Nada. Scale hasn't nudged a bit. I truly despise middle age.

So keep the weekly challenges going. I'll try to hop on the bandwagon. Looks like I'm going to have to give up carbs/gluten and all non-fruit sugar next. I hate dieting and generally prefer making life style changes, but I think I need to do something to get the ball rolling in the right direction.

I've been traveling and not around a scale, but now that I am back I am down 3 more pounds in the last 3 weeks - 194 now. Still on track and I don't have to post an embarrassing photo yet.

Lost another pound last week, down to 169. I caught a dang cold so I wasn't up for much excercise - only worked out Friday. Didn't have much appetite, that helped me out.

Good job on getting after it on the Diamond Mike, I'm in for this week.

Great thread everyone. Though I have somehow managed to keep my weight somewhat under control - I could still stand to loose 5lbs or so. However, the main thing for me is as time passes I have become less active. Gone are the days of 4 or 5 workouts a week and or 3 or 4 climbing days a week. Heck, I'm lucky to climb twice a month right now. Work, life and a broken ankle will do that to ya.

But! ... following the progress of you all has given me new inspiration! Don't know if you'll continue to post your successes and failures from this point on but, I have been prodded on to simply exercise more and think about it less. Thanks!

Y'all have been quiet recently -- probably too busy running, eating healthily and losing all that weight :)

I believe the Schu has not fallen from the wagon but he has torched it instead. Something about barbecue season.

Why you gotta punk me like that Kev? In fact the smoker has been collecting dust since we all threw down back in early July. I have been working out regularly (3-4 times/wk.) since the 4th of July weekend. I've lost 13 lbs. and seem to be holding steady there. I'll need to step up the workout routine and cut back on the beers to gain any more ground I think.

One of our old friends (hint: could get folks fired up in the forums like no one else) just dropped 40 or so w/ a juice fast. I am considering trying his system too. Actually want to, but my fat is really pleading with me to stick around.

I've been holding steady at around 195, which is 17 pounds down from where I started. I want to drop another 20, but I've found the discipline to be unmanageable while i've been moving in to my new house. I'm pretty settled in now and working hard to get ready for ski season so i think i'll be able to start making progress again.

I'm happy that i've been able to maintain my lower weight while eating reasonably well and working out consistently but not really intensely. It definitely has shown me that actually losing weight takes a real commitment to hard working out and really watching what you eat - it just doesn't happen unless it is your #1 priority. Time to get back to work.

I'm picturing a fatty climber sitting in an SUV guzzling mayo while his friends are 10 feet away racking up next to a wall.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
