wow what was that about ^ i would bet at the rate things are going the gym will be closed for fire/restriction soon enough. what are you looking for to climb trad/sport?

Socorro is BLM and should be open, North Wall can be bearable, barely. The Sandia foothills, Albuquerque open space should be open as well. As far as I know National Forest is pretty much all closed at this point, maybe El Rito. Be careful, we don't need anymore fires in the state.

There is some forecast rain at the end of the 10 day outlook for what its worth, not much really, at 10 days out they have no idea, probably wishful thinking.

Are El Rito and Cochiti Mesa shut down due to the fire?

Never mind. Just got my answer here:

Caja del Rio was still open in Santa Fe Forest so Diablo should still be OK (just gotta be in the shade to climb though)Carson closed today so I would bet El Rito is out. Bouldering around Glorietta was still open too I think. Maybe the Taos stuff along the river is still open but not sure. I'm going to Colo. I guess

All the open space and national forest around Albuquerque is now closed. I heard the mayor talking about it this morning.

Box Canyon near the town of Socorro is open, but it will be hot and the gnats are sometimes hungry. Mornings are nice, plus Alcohol Wall, Spedville, Harmonica Convention and Spook get evening shade. Do not start a fire or it might get closed too!

Socorro is a town, and is mostly private land :-)

You are thinking of Box, one of the many climbing areas near Socorro. I wish they would fix the MP entry for Box.

El Rito is smokey! I was there on Tue and the smoke was making my eyes water. Gilman, Crystal Cave, Big Block, and the foothill boulders are still okay from what I can tell in the map. Socorro will be a scorcher. The Tunnel, Last Chance, are all part of Lincoln Nat. Forest hence closed. Someone said that Palomas is closed is this true? It's not listed in the Cibola closures so I am a little confused. As far as I can tell you can still go to the crest parking lot, ski hill, and anything on the East side of the mountain. Do you find this to be the case? Sandia Closures I believe that rd#165 is the back-side of the Sandia's. According to the map it's good.

Ty:
Palomas is in the USFS Sandia district which is all closed.
Your pdf lists the only openings at the top of page 2 which are basically nothing. Last I knew you could bike/hike at the ski area and that was about it.

Thanks Paul, I see what you mean now. The bold green is easy to see, but the USFS is a light yellow. It's hard to differentiate between the public land and USFS. The Sandia's are in bold green which made me think that was the part affected by the closure. So, no Big Block either? Am I correct in thinking that you can still go to Gilman and Crystal Cave?

The Enchanted Tower in Datil, might be a possibility. Tres Piedras in the north is always a nice trip, hopefully the smoke & restrictions don't apply there. In western NM, there is the Mentmore Climbing area, short mostly sport routes ranging from low 5s to 5.12s with few single pitch trad routes. Just my 2 cents.

Would the climbing around el malpais be open? The main page for el malpais national monument said nothing of closures, just strong fire restrictions.

Looking for any crags that have sport that are still open in the state, told a group I'd take them outdoors. From what I can surmise, everything up north is closed because it is either on fire or in extreme danger of a fire, and as of two weeks ago so was enchanted tower, so I'm at a loss for what to do. Any ideas or updates would be much appreciated

Is Diablo open?

Re: Diablo

I tried to go on Tuesday and there was a fire closure sign on the fence that you have to cross to get into the wash. You could probably scramble around the cliffside and avoid the wash, but it was pretty clear that they don't want you there. Not sure if anything has changed since then, but I doubt it, since there hasn't been any rain to speak of.

We've been climbing in the gorge after 2pm. The shade has been comfortable and the light is good until 8-9 pm. Temps drop pretty quickly out of the sun. The river is a nice retreat for a swim. I do not know the status at all the areas but I believe access is all on BLM land and thus Stage II. Utopian Vistas, Vista Verde, Dead Cholla, John Dunn crags, Miners, Wild and Scenic, Roadside, Malette, should all be open. Camping is nice at Wild Rivers and Orilla Verde but I don't know about availability.
