Heading to Rumney to try out the app this weekend, but one quick question. I know it has all the data loaded in and can access it with no internet connection to show you where the cliffs are, but if you do have cell/3G reception will it show you what cliff you are in front of? Say I am in front of a wall and want to know which one it is, can I bring up the map and it will show my position in relation to the labeled walls?

A cool feature I'd like to see one of these days is a search function where if you had reception you could search for say, the best routes of a certain grade and it would tell you the closest ones in relation to your current position. Would be great for it to tell me say, where the closest 5.10s on other walls are from wherever I was standing. Does that make sense?

The iPhone GPS receiver works independent from cell coverage.

The location lock will probably take a little longer due to lack of cell-triangulation in case of no reception.

The company that made it (using licensed data from Ward's guidebook) gave up on it and yanked it from the store several years ago. They claimed it was "too difficult to maintain" which strikes me as odd because they continue to maintain 5 or 6 other climbing guide apps, all of which have identical interfaces.

Was the app significantly better than just pre-downloading the MountainProject data?

The app was a digital representation of Ward Smith's guidebook. So in terms of Mountain Project it's a toss-up. MP is (weirdly) actually missing route info for many routes at Rumney that are in the Ward Smith guidebook. Not sure what the plan was for the company to keep it updated (but again, they're obviously doing it for other crags).

The one thing it really had going for it over the MP app is that the UI was very, very nice. The MP app is really awful in my opinion.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
