Hi folks,

Wonder if there is any place I can do a short weekend overnight backpacking trip in CO around this time of the year that there are not too much snow?

Thanks

Lost Creek Wilderness in the South Platte is great, especially if you are a rock climber. Beautiful rock formations all over. There are several 2 to 3 day loops and a bigger outer loop. Highly recommended. Wigwam dome is a mile or so in from the north east trailhead to Lost Creek.

Lost Creek is awesome and will be snow free right now. Did a short trip there last fall at the Goose Head Trail which you can make into a much larger loop if you wanted to.

Really sweet how close it is to Denver and the variety of things you can see.

Anyways I have a bunch of photos from that trip here: andylibrande.com/news/2010/…

+1 for Lost Creek Wilderness and the Goose Creek TH. Did a trip there last summer (a little too hot honestly) which means it will be pleasant this time of year. Lots of options depending on how much time you want to spend back there.

+1 for the Goose Creek Trail, starting from the Goose Creek Trailhead and hiking North. The valley past the Shafthouse is incredible, where the Lost Creek gets appropriately named.

Enjoy!

awesome caving back there too, but water might be too deep in june. if you ever go in the fall, bring a wetsuit. ultra cool.

PLEASE note that Forest Road 211 (which accesses Goose Creek trailhead/CG and more) is closed at Cheesmen Lake until May 2012. I don't know why it's closed, but don't drive down from Boulder with plans of starting there...

Probably should call the south platte ranger office to get the official low down...but I'm pretty sure the only thing closed is access to Cheesman Lake. Denver Water is doing a multi year maintenance project on the dam, hence the closure. Was up there last weekend fishing Cheesman Canyon and as far as I could tell access to goose creek/wigwam/lost valley ranch was still open.

We ended up going to Greyrock area in Poudre Canyon. The climb and the camp are great over there!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
