I am new to the bay bay. Is there any way to get from the bay area to the owens river gorge? I looked up the info on dot but it seems like every road is closed. Am I missing something?
Nope, you are not missing anything. Hwy 108 (Sonora Pass) and Hwy 120 (Tioga Pass through Yosemite) are closed all winter. Until those two roads open, which will probably be mid to late June this year, the only reasonable way over to the eastside is to go up Hwy. 50 to Meyers (just before S. Lake Tahoe) and then connect over on Hwy 89/88 to Hwy 395 in Gardnerville, Nevada. Take Hwy 395 south towards Bishop from there.
To be honest, it is not all that much further to up through Tahoe anyway, and everyone takes this route all winter long.....its not so bad.
....note, I guess you could also take Hwy 88 all the way from the central valley to Gardnerville, but this will take a little longer.

There are plenty of less crowded, quality moderates away from those walls.
Thanks folks for the great information. I had an excellent time at the gorge. Both on Friday morning and this morning sonora pass was closed and by the time I got on the road it opened back up!
