Ten Sleep Memorial Day??

I'm thinking about taking a trip to Ten Sleep for Memorial Day weekend. I've never been, so does anyone know if this is too early in the season, or what the conditions are like up there? The forecast for Buffalo says mid-60s next weekend (I'm very aware that this could change & that Ten Sleep is at a different elevation!!!), but any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you're coming from CO Wild Iris or Sinks would be a better bet. Still too snowy for much of anything in the Horns

Hey KB,
I went up there for a trip on June 20 a few years back and it was already way hot. I would think late may should be prime. Hopefully some locals will chime in on current conditions. And Tensleep is way better than WI or Sinks in my opinion.

Well I am in Casper right now and there is still snow on our mountain. You can see the bighorns in the distance and they are retaining all of their snowpack. Most of our reservoirs at at 190% capacity. I doubt any climbing is going to happen in Tensleep until mid-June.

Going to Sinks or Wild Iris will definitely be a better bet. I got out there a few weeks ago and it's getting real nice there. The chilly weather probably kept a lot of the tourists out, so we had the campsites all to ourselves. :P

I climbed there last weekend. Some snow on the upper end but the lower half was good. I heard the were supposed to get a massive dump from this storm, so not sure now. Mondo wall still had a little snow on the trail but there is lots of overhanging stuff that will be dry. We climbed at the Dry Wall and it was good and dry at the base. Buy the way, The Dry Wall has many great bolted crack climbs. So bring the tape because these are super fun to mix it up. We climbed cracks all day in preparation for the Tower and I couldn't belive I was climbing cracks at Ten Sleep and having so much fun. Tape is a must here for these cracks. I know most don't come here to climb cracks, but try these, they are closly bolted, and it's worth taping for them.
FYI, There was a massive rockfall at the "Save the Best for Last" route area, and I mean massive, Most of the upper wall came down. My friend climbed there on one day and the next day they went back, it was down, scary.! Too bad that was one of the best routes in the canyon.

I've been twice this season, last time was there a week ago and I had the same experience as canyonclimber. Lower canyon was dry, but the Mondo was still pretty snowy. Also, forget about the Ark. There's still plenty of good stuff in the lower canyon, but hopefully the Mondo will be melted off by the time you get there because there are some unmissable gems up there.

I'm heading up there either way as I don't mind a little snow at the base. I have been up there at this time of year before it's hit or miss and there is plenty to do in the lower canyon. No need to hit the Arc, Temple, etc there is so much to do there without heading out that far or staying up at the top of the canyon.

Tensleep will probably be fine over Memorial Day. I concur that it is better than the stuff around Lander for most people. There are significantly more moderate routes there. Plus if it sucks, it is only a couple hours drive to get to Sinks. And Sinks has been good all winter.

Thanks everyone for all the info, it's appreciated!

Is the Buffalo forecast the best one to look at for Ten Sleep? Maybe minus a couple degrees, but thereabouts? Thanks again!

You might consider looking at the forecast for Ten Sleep :)

Actually, it looks like the climbing is a few thousand feet higher in elevation than the town. (I've never been to either, but have been following the weather intently).

Pretty sure this is where the climbing is:

forecast.weather.gov/MapCli…

And it looks like climbingweather.com has the actual climbing area pinpointed too.

Clearly I can't keep up with technology ;) Thanks for those links, it's nice to not have to guess about the weather! Cheers

if you look up ten sleep on noaa you can pin point your forecast for the canyon and they'll tell you exactly what's going on up there.

As far as conditions, like the above have stated all of the lower stuff is fine, the mondo trail has snow on it, but it's managable. I saw two climbers pull out hiking boots and gaiters at the mondo pullout (brilliant idea if you want to get back to mondo) but there was is little to no snow up against the walls so you'll only have to put up with it on the hike.

good luck. hopefully the weather holds so i can get out as well

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
