Jits, that is an impressive turn-around. Keep it up.

There are 3 methods- a conductivity test, weighing under water, and multiple point calipers. 2&3 are the most accessible & if the data agree, are generally accepted as accurate. If they don't, then you access the 3rd test. High quality gyms/heath centers usually can do this.

Will,
Sweet tea = Liquid sugar
If you cut back on that a bit I bet your results would be even better. Just my thoughts though. I drink either Coke zero (if I feel like a pop) Unsweetened tea (green, oolong or black) or water.

Thanks JML. It's taken a lot of work and a VERY patient wife. ha!

You can go by BMI for a reference point.

Awesome work guys! I weigh about 10 pounds more now than I did this time last year and I'm pretty sure it's the increased beer intake that did it. When I was real skinny it was because of lots of exercise and lean, sparing meals with way less beer.

Best weight loss program hands down: Torrid GF break up. Between the sleepness nights and loss of appetite that can last for weeks, nay months on end, you'll shed those unwanted pounds like they were cherished memories of the times you...spent together...

Not to mention the water loss from the copious tears. Copius, I tell you. That means "a lot." Aquaban may have the Good Housekeeping seal of approval, but that aint nuthin.

Oh yes, abject poverty also helps. Can't afford to eat? Well, can't afford to put on any weight.

Entendeded bouts of the flu. Yes, that too works wonders. Look into it, especially the GI type. I "shit you not" the pounds will melt away.

You could go on the West Virginia diet: eat more possum.

it took you til 40? lucky. my body rebelled on me at around 30. 5'10" and about 175. Would like to be a little bit leaner maybe. Running/lifting/other cardio and weekend climbing do a pretty good job of letting me continue to drink a few beers and not have to watch every morsel that i eat.

The important thing about changing your diet is not to cut anything out completely. Otherwise, your body will realize it has been cut off from the good stuff and go into conservation mode and start storing more fat. Tailor off your consumption slowly so that the body doesn't freak out.

I took off about 10lbs from March to May. Limited myself to about 1800 calories a day on weekdays, focused on lean proteins, no animal fats at all. JML's beta on not eating late in the evening and night worked well for me too.

Combined with hangboard training, the weight loss contributed to a really good spring sport climbing season for me.

I've just started going to the 24 hour gym after work (week 2 now) with my gym rat co-workers in addition to the outdoor excercise I get on my days off, and have lost 5 lbs., Being only 5'2", a loss of a 5 lbs. makes a good difference in how I feel ( energy level, and appearance) which is motivation enough for me to hang out at a gym with the Vegas locals at midnight. : / As far as my diet goes, I eat fairly healthy these days anyway (most of the time), but have cut down on my portion sizes of meals. I'm shooting for another loss of 5 -7 lbs, and working hard with weights to get stronger. I've never really worked out regularly at gyms during my work week, so this is a new experience, and I'm excited to see what the end result will be. Went climbing today, and felt pretty damn good! Woohoo!! : )

Why limit yourself to one or the other, Jody?

Do BOTH.

Dropped 20 in depth of winter when I usually eat like a bear and put on weight. Feb to late March. More fish, fruit, veges, less snacking at night. Plenty of sleep, but did NOT cut back on the beer. Miracles!

I lost 22 lbs from februrary to june. I dindn't do any exercise except climb every other day. I ran a caloric deficit.

I figured I needed about 1800 cals/day on non climbing days to maintain weight and about 2200 on climbing days to maintain weight. A lb of fat has about 3500 cals in it. I ran about a 500 calorie/day deficit and lost about a lb/week. I didn't count anything other than total calories to keep it simple. The only other thing I did was eat small meals, about 4-5 per day. Right before bed, I'd eat about 50 calories, so I could fall asleep easily.

After cutting from 176 to 154 (5 11 3/4) I was 6% body fat. Climbing improved substantially and in june I did my hardest boulder problem ever. In july, I slowly increased calories to maintain weight. Now, I'm 156 and still 6%, I've added two pounds of muscle, only from climbing.

I never wanted to think that it would make such a big difference b4, it's truly amazing what cutting weight can do.
