Im two weeks into a 5-month stay in Bhaktapur, Nepal and Im already losing my mind for lack of climbing. Buildering runs a lose-lose line between vandalism and blasphemy, and most door jams are too flimsy for even a meager crimpy pullup. I brought a pair of shoes and a harness, but no rope or rack (I am teaching here and was very short on space/weight), and I am traveling alone. I will thus need to find a climbing partner and some gear. I'm willing to buy a rope, but the only dynamic rope I've found so far was marked at 23.450 Rupees (~350 dollars), which is way steep for my limited budget (I'm volunteering). So, wise internet, where should I begin my search? Are there trekking agencies that also deal in free climbing expeditions? Is there a central meeting place/crag/gym/web resource where I can begin my search? Is anyone IN nepal? Or leaving soon and looking to shed gear?? I am full of questions and bare of knowledge, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, and Namaste.
There's a mountaineering club in KTM with a wall pasanglhamu.org/ Good for a workout, but pretty basic. You can meet partners there...I think it's on Ring road somewhere. It's been a while...
There's an OK crag near town. Bolted limestone. It's at a big reserve on a hill. Ask around at the club...it's like a 30min drive from town.
Check out the Nepal section of this site. I posted two of the local climbing walls. Unfortunately neither of them is very good. There is also bouldering wall in Patan although I haven't been there myself.
The crag that David mentions is Nagarjun (also on this site). Unfortunately the park is open, but it has essentially been closed to climbing. Recently the park authorities have made it mandatory to get a permit to climb, but no one an seem to figure out the process for getting a permit. Even organized climbing guides can't get permission. This thread talks about the demise of climbing at Nagarjun.
I know this is a very old post, but does anybody have any beta for the areas mentioned or if the situation in Nagarjun has improved or worsened? Did Nagarkot end up getting developed?
