Has anyone driven a car to the Black Velvet trailhead? I'm debating between renting an economy car (with insurance) or an SUV. Thanks.

I took MY Honda Civic back there a month or 2 ago. Just have to pick and choose your line. You may find a rock or 2 that doesn't want you pass. An SUV would have NO problem, a low car is tricky but doable (beginning of April.)

Was there last weekend with a rental car. No problems.

You can definitely get in there with a basic rental car. Bear in mind though that rental car policies explicitly state that the vehicle is not to be driven on unpaved roads, so any insurance you purchase may be nullified if it can be linked to an incident on the BVC road.

I was back there two weekends ago with an Elantra with no issues

I had driven my little Mitsubishi back there several times. It typically scraped bottom a few times but made it. Once I upgraded to the Subaru I had no more bottom scrapes. If my Mitsubishi could make it anything can.

Have fun, there are a ton of fun routes in there!

Did it today. There was one section rough enough that you would have to be pretty careful in an economy car, but certainly doable.

If I had a rental car, i'd smash up it!

But I personally don't do it in my honda civic, i've seen plenty of oil pans bust... and I'm not willing to spend the money fixing it.

Come to think of it, my old Mitsubishi eventually died of a broken frame . . . I wonder how that happened?

I ended up taking the economy rental out there two days in a row. No problems and we had a blast.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
