Our family will be spending a week in RMNP in June and we would like to get some climbing in. There will be two adults, a 16 year old (the strongest climber), and a 3 year old. So well be swapping out, with one person watching the 3 year old. Basic desires would be a relatively easy approach, and an area where the little one could run around without falling off a cliff, going into a road, or disturbing other climbers. I would prefer to just bring a sport rack but that is flexible. Any suggestions or advice?
Jurassic Park in Estes has a lot of sport climbs, you can scramble up to the top pretty easily to set up top ropes, and there is a slab at the top of the area where a trad anchor can be built for easy 5.4ish top roping. Park at lilly lake walk along the right side of the lake to a path that veers right it gets pretty steep but only a ten minute hike or so from there. Good views, never too crowded whenever I have been there, and ample space for the young one.
Another place would be on a small crag on the east side of Mary's lake just across the road from the lake side pull off/parking area. 30 second approach. The main face has 3 climbs that be can be done from one top rope set up from bolts. Either lead the 30' center route with gear and set up the top rope or walk left around the corner and scramble up to the bolts. Just a little south of town near Mary's lake lodge.
