Catatonic (ADK) - anyone climb it?

Anyone have any experience with this climb and/or the approach to it. I've been eyeing it in the ADK rock book for quite some time and was thinking about heading up to give it a shot. From what it sounds many of the trails have been flooded due to beaver activity. Any information on it would be great. thanks.

Are you talking this season, or near term? Everything is sodden in the 'dacks right now from all the rain. On top of that there are still lots of roads, especially the secondary roads that are closed because they are flooded. I went through Cascade pass this weekend and there was water shooting off of some point on many of the cliffs.

JP,
I've been back there in the past couple years. The trails aren't that bad. That said with all the water we have right now, it's a different story. Last summer, the trail in was fine maybe a little wet in spots. I trail ran it at some point if that gives you a reference. It's nice and flat for 5 miles with a little bit of gain at the tail end.

Like the book says, it's rattly fingers. If that's your size, then you'll love it.

If you're hiking, the start of the approach is pancake-flat and low, and often flooded (in a good year), but passable. (On my last visit, I waded across several sections carrying my shoes.) The Adirondack Park is experiencing record flooding, so it will certainly be flooded. You can avoid all the flooded bits by taking a boat to Janacks Landing.

On a clear day, the cliff will most certainly be dry. It's positioned on an actual summit with no drainage above, so it will dry quickly.

I was in there on Friday, May 6th. The trails were incredibly dry so the approach was very easy-going.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
