2011 Adirondack Peregrine Closures

Effective April 4th 2011 Moss Cliff, the Upper and Lower Washbowls, and most of Poke-O will be closed (see link below for the open routes at Poke-O). The DEC shuts down these cliffs initially and will open up accordingly depending on where the Peregrines make their aeries. Usually this only applies to Poke-O as the other cliffs are too small to allow for this. I'll keep an eye on the DEC site and update this thread as things change. Thanks.

While we're on the subject of Poke-o, does anyone have any information about camping in front of it? Could you sleep in your car without getting hassled? Also, anyone interested in climbing there between the dates of may 1st and may 7th? I'll be there all week.

All I know is the campground has been closed as of the 2009 season. Jim or Derek, do you guys have anything to add re: camping at Poke-O?

Jim,
Thanks for that update. The DEC hasn't updated their website yet.

As I understand it, the campground is closed, meaning NO camping. The DEC told me that it will also be patrolled.

Having said that, I've seen tents and cars parked in the campground, so perhaps one can get away with it. Either way, there are no services (water, bathrooms, etc.)

A little late on the update...

From the DEC update:

Willsboro Bay Cliff

With permission of the landowner, all routes on this privately-owned cliff, are closed at this time. Peregrine Falcons are currently nesting on the cliff. In the recent past nesting attempts by falcons have been abandoned due to disturbances from climbers.

Wilmington Notch

Peregrine falcons are nesting on the Labor Day Wall. All climbing routes on the Labor Day Wall are closed. Climbing routes on Moss Cliff are open.

Chapel Pond

Peregrine falcons are nesting on Lower Washbowl Cliffs. All climbing routes on Lower Washbowl Cliff remain closed. Climbing routes on Upper Washbowl Cliffs are open.

Poke-o-Moonshine Mountain

Peregrine falcon nesting has been confirmed on The Nose on the Main Face of Poke-o-Moonshine Mountain, rock climbing routes between and including Garter and Mogster (Routes #26 through #82 in Adirondack Rock) will remain closed through the nesting season.
