Hi, I'll be in rotator cuff/biceps rehab at DArtmouth Hitchcock after Ap 14, but would like to find an experienced climber/MD/PT who has worked with this surgery.
I don't expect to do overhanging routes ever again.
Don't give up before you've started. I have had a SLAP repair on the left shoulder (4/10) and a rotator cuff repair on the right (12/10) and have been climbing for a couple of weeks. Granted nothing more difficult than V1 bouldering and 5.8 roped and in a gym but...starting to climb none the less. I plan on getting stronger and climbing harder as time and strength and lots of hard work permit. Good luck with your surgery and therapy.
Don't count yourself out. After a shoulder dislocation (and subsequent subluxations), I'm still climbing as hard as I ever did - steep boulders, steep routes, you name it. Do the rehab and climb carefully for a while, but don't limit yourself. You'll be OK.
2 months out of a nasty double rotator cuff tear, 7.5 cm bicep anchor dislocate. Few weeks off, back to normal, although my upper arm looks quite distorted. Lift weights, light at first, build those muscles, mileage on easy terrain. Thera-band seems to be working nice. Lots of water, i opted to skip the surgery, til next time it inevitably happens.
I had surgery on the right shoulder in '05 and left in '08. Bankart repair in both (torn ligaments resulting in multiple dislocations). As others have said, don't count yourself out! I'm climbing harder than ever. Sure, I don't have the flexibility I once had, but it's not limiting. 6 months recovery for each one. DO NOT attempt to rehab faster or do something ahead of schedule. Plan on a long rehab but you will be good to go at the end!!
