Hey

Thought I would just spew some info I gained while heading up the Poudre to climb.

First, climbing at GreyRock is currently closed (3/15/11) due to a wildfire. I though it started on the Sunday??? Bummer, was gonna get some trad in.

Decided to head to the palace for some sport as a cancellation prize. Did a few climbs up the poudre face and was walking down over to the Scepter. While en-route a buddy (who I didn't know was up there until we met up) yelled for me at the top of mineshaft wall. Someone had hung 9 draws on 5.12, I think rapid fire. He was gonna rap in and grab the draws because he thought they were booty. I informed him otherwise. He left them. They were still there when I left for whomever you are, but I don't know for how long.

I was up there yesterday and the trail is still closed. Wind was blowing hard too. I hope the rain last night helped.

Hey Matt do you know how bad Grey Rock ended up being? How much, badly it burned, if it's open again etc? If you showed up to work ever I'd just ask you in person;)

Ha Fea, I told you I got a real job. I don't know bout Grey Rock, but I did see plenty of people hiking it when I drove down the canyon yesterday.

Somebody is just projecting Rapid Fire,
and would probably appreciate their draws being there when they return.

9 draws on a single pitch sport climb does not mean its booty.
Give them some time to send, before you decide to take them.

Ran up to Greyrock after work yesterday, and didn't notice any new fire damage. Only went to the junction with the Meadow Loop, but trail is the same as it was pre-fire.

So, anything that is not in someone's hand is booty, to be taken...

Might as well apply this mindset to someone's unoccupied car, who's owner is off stealing draws off a climb?

I don't get the mentality that justifies taking anything that is not your's. And, have not respect for it.

"Professor, is it your contention that Shakespear was an imposter?"

"Yes, that is my contention."

Name that 90s comedy series -

Stealing draws is lame.

Agreed, this topic gets subjective in two ways to me.

1. How long is to long to leave draws up? some people say a week or two, others just never take them down and they become dangerous tat that nobody replaces for 10 years, cause there "that one guys" draws.

2. What is unsightly during your outdoor experience? Some say roads bridges and tunnels are unsightly, but they still use them to drive to the climbing areas. Others say unpainted hangers and chain that can barely be seen through binoculars is unsightly. Then theres places like Red Rocks were chalk can be seen from miles away. But RR also sits next to vegas which is the biggest eyesore/cesspool on the planet.

In this specific case, the route is across a river and behind a buttress, so thers no way draws can be seen by non-climbers/land managers unless there standing under the route. Rapid Fire is a great DP route, give the guy some time to finish it up...but how long will that be...

Ben,

Not to get into whether it is right or wrong to leave draws on a route; especially, one that is easy to rap down after walking to the chains. I just wanted to give some FYI to whose ever draws they were and for others who may hang draws around the Palace. Missing draws stink for everyone and really tears apart the climbing community.

As mentioned draws not taken by my group. I do want to state though that new climbers and a lot of CSU students visit the Palace and may not know your "ethics." They will take the draws and not think anything of it besides, "SWEET finally got more than 5 draws!," and not think it is that big of a deal. The Palace (in my opinion) is the most known sport area in the canyon; thus, receiving a lot of traffic. Just kinda giving a heads up.

I wouldn't leave draws next to a popular 5.10 in Gumbyville and expect them to still be there when I got back. Lame but true.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
