Cops in Indian Creek

Sadly the Sheriff's office of San Juan county have been frequent in the Indian Creek campgrounds the last two weekends. Just wanted to give a heads up to all ya'll dope smoking climbers out there to be careful, and to create a forum if anyone has stories.

I've personally seen the cops in Bridger Jacks two weekends ago, Super Bowl this past weekend, and heard there were some cops snooping around in Creek Pastures.

In case some of the California and Colorado climbers out there who legally enjoy the herb in their home states don't know, it's a stiff fine and a likely visit to jail when busted with any amount in Mormon Country aka Utah.

word,
Cliff

When I was 19 I got an underage drinking ticket in a national forest. It was pretty much the equivalent of a parking ticket. Pay a fine and it's gone.

FWIW, I don't know that the creation of a discussion for the look out of cops in regards to the use of an illegal substance on public land, on a public internet forum looks particularly good for the climbing community. Maybe it's me, but I like to stay in the good graces of the police, the BLM, and anyone else that may utilize the areas we climb at.

I know the legalization of marijuana in some states has lead to a sort of "well it's legal where we come from" ideology but it's your responsibility to know the laws of the area you're in. Not that marijuana being illegal has ever really deterred it's use.

Ya there were some POlice hanging around creek pasture a few nights ago, didn't seem very friendly.

If you aren't doing anything illegal you should have nothing to worry about. Personally, I am glad cops go out to any popular place and tell people to quit smoking weed. I hate it when I am at a crag and people a few yards away from me light up a bowl. It ruins my trip, go light a bowl up with all your friends in your house, not the crag or campground. My climbing partners and I do not appreciate as well as the families around us. These are probably the climbers that leave tape on the ground and their cigarette butts.

Thanks for the heads up, Cliff Cash.
JLP, seems like a pretty thoughtful act on Cash's part. Doesn't really seem to be a troll, what's to be gained.
If you're not breaking the law, there's really nothing to sweat.

That's a pretty lame statement..I'm sure you didn't mean that all stoners throw down trash. You must have made a typo, eh Brent?

So what happens if they catch you with beer that isn't 3.2, or anything like that? Are they going to set up road blocks to check coolers and dump anything out that wasn't bought in Utah, as I've seen them do near Lake Powell years ago?

It's a free country, I'll do what I want.

Are you being a preachy little bitch or what?! No pot while camping? That's just crazy talk!

I didn't say all stoners throw trash on the ground, I said it probably was. It is a pretty logical statement. 1. People who smoke weed are more susceptible to being lazy. 2. Laziness is the definition of why people leave climbing tape on the ground.

Some of the hardest working, quality folks I know, ... folks who do more for the climbing community and for their crags... like the weed.

What a lame generalization from someone who clearly is very close minded. If you are ever around me, I hope I ruin your trip!

Because I'm sure you never jaywalk, speed, or do anything else illegal. I'm sure you don't believe in blind deference to all laws, regardless of their sensibility. You personally have a problem with pot, therefore you're happy to see that particular law enforced. If cops started getting on your nuts for all the myriad ways you almost certainly break the law each and every day (we all do!) then I'm sure you'd be singing a different tune.

FWIW I don't smoke anything, nor do I drink. But your mentality is ridiculous. We need to use our brains when it comes to the legal system and justice, which are plainly two different things, in an effort to make them line up.

Seriously? All the other nonsense aside for a moment, I would like to know how often you have actually encountered someone that has actually lit up "a few yards" from a family. I doubt that has ever happened.

God forbid you ever go to a concert, sporting event, or any other public entertainment event - you should tell all those people trying to enjoy themselves that they should just go home because they are ruining your trip. Sheesh, since when did all the stuffy rules of "polite society" infiltrate the outdoors where most people go to get away from such nonsense?

To Brent,

Let me guess, Republican, Pro Gun and anti abortion, just generalizing.

Brent, you are most likely a troll, but if not: I hate it when I'm at a crag and some uptight douchebag proceeds to be all anal and concerned with other people's business a few yards away from me. It ruins my trip, go be all uptight and judgemental with all of your friends in your house, not the crag or campground. My climbing partners and I do not appreciate your critique and all-knowing attitude. These are probably the climbers that spray beta endlessly, brag about all their accomplishments even though nobody is interested, and simply have annoying personalities in general.

Catherine, the uptight douchebag probably is not a douchebag until you do something dumb, i.e. smoke weed a few yards away, yell and scream in the park/crag (unless multi-pitch), and probably let go of the brake end on an ATC device while your partner is climbing.

Brent, are you from Utah or something?

+100 to this statement!

The cops snooping around the camp site is like entrapment!
if they are polite, and talking with people/hanging with people, walking the beat....well i guess that is ok, and there is nothing people can do.... if they are snooping around, just really looking to bust people for nothing, than that is soooo wrong....

maybe brent WAS the cop patrolling around the campsites...???

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
