Wanted: Climbing Partner

I am looking for a rock climbing partner in the Lehi Utah area. I am new to this sport, but I want to become the best climber ever. I have only been climbing one month now at the Lehi Recreation Center, and I am certified to top rope belay (staff assisted). I don't own any transportation, or have a cell phone, but I check my e-mail at the library every day. Lets go climbing!!!

The cool part to this is,
My boss just gave me all of his climbing gear from when he tried climbing at my age. He says the gear is a bit old, but it should be good. The shoes are brand new, the rope was used to repell a few times, and the protection is almost new. So, lets go out and use my new gear!!

We could meet at the library and climb, climb, CLIMB!!! Please, send me a private message and lets go climbing soon. I plan to be good enough to be bolting first ascents in another two weeks, so let be a team and make history!

Thanks,
J.F. Sebastian

Pretty good, until the bolting FAs comment. Still, the gear inventory was good for a chuckle.

Wow! Brand new EB's. What a treasure! Now you can move up through all the stages of climbing shoe evolution just as us old tradsters did through the years.

definently a good free gift! i would look into a new harness, and i too, like everyone else would take those shoes off you're hands, hell even if they wouldnt fit, they will fit in my gear closet with all the other loaner shoes, for my not so climbing friends that tag along occasionally

Sorry Elena, I have only been climbing a month. I sure would LOVE to climb with you, and we could both use the hammer.

The staff at the gym won't let me use my harness, so I may just have to use it for slings. It does sound kind of crunchy, so it might not be the best to use as a harness anyways.

Wow! My new shoes have received a lot of attention. My boss say that the Boreal Fire shoes took the place of these, but that they would be fine until I can buy a pair of those. If I can find another pair of shoes at the swap in SLC this saturday, I will probably sell them.

Everyone, I still need a partner!!
Come meet me at the gym, and lets climb together. Help a LA boy out

OK, The flea market at a place called Black Diamond was really helpful for me getting gear. I have a used 50 meter rope now, instead of only 40 feet. The guy said he only used it one season, and that was ten years ago. It was 30 dollars.
I picked up these "hex" things for about 20 dollars. I am not sure how you place them yet, and I am not sure how you are supposed to get them out after you hammer them in, but I am sure someone will show me in time.
Finally, I have some of these "cam" things. They are made by Splitter Gear, and look really cool. No need for a hammer with those :-) all five of those cost me 50 dollars.
So, for 100 dollars total, I now have almost all the gear it takes to go climbing. I still need a partner, and would really like to learn how to use all of this soon. E-mail me PLEASE!

You might want to check that rope before you start climbing. I'm no expert, but I think you're suppose to retire a rope if its more than five years old regardless of use. Best of luck!

Everyone:
Thank you for all your e-mails of advice and support. Everything you suggest is so helpful, and I learn something new each day. It seems I have made some mistakes, but I will be able to laugh about them in the future as one email said.

I will be doing the Momentum two week learners program, and I am sure that will be a lot of help. I will be buying a newer harness, and turn my webbing into quickdraws. With that, climbing success is assured. I will see you in the mountains soon,

You could tie your ropes together and that will get you up to 90'. Plus, no worries about passing the knot through your belay device, since you don't have one and are obviously hip belaying. Way to keep it simple.

I have a 50 Meter rope now, not a 40 foot and 50 foot rope.

What is a hip belay?

I now have a locking carabiner, and a ATC.

P.S: I am selling the shoes to someone interested. It seems that those shoes (especially new) are of interest to a lot of people. They deserve to be in a good home, and not worn out on my feet.

I would get some good instruction on how to belay. You will be doing it all the time through-out your soon to be climbing career. So learning proper technique is essential. Hip belaying is basically passing the around you hips and gripping it with your hands.

Good to see you are getting out of the lab; I know you have toy friends but they still don't compare to the real thing.

I have real transportation now.
I can meet people for climbing now, so let me know if your going.

Forget that rope, I got a goldline in like new condition, although it makes a crackling sound when you bend it and it breaks if you tie a knot in it to tight.

Bad news is that those kinds of harnesses tend to cut off certain appendages. Good news about this particular one is that the harness would break before it does any damage.

I truly admire the ambition, but may I recommend that you stick to the gym to build climbing knowledge and to hiking to build a strong knowledge of the outdoors prior to bringing this to the next level (trying not to be presumptuous-just guessing here). Although climbing requires ambition, the lack of patience will cause death.

PS, I'd love to have the warthog as an addition to my rack, although I don't particularly ever wish to place it.

It seems that the endless rains have finally stopped afterall. I am ready to get outside, and looking for partners! I met a fun group of scouts at the draper rocks yesterday, so if you can, lets met there and go climbing.
