Spring Break Climbing

Looking for suggestions as to where to go for a Spring Break climbing trip in mid march. Preferably in the Southeast. We're coming from Tennessee.

My first thought was New River Gorge, but wasn't sure of the weather in March.

Would prefer mostly sport climbing but some trad would be cool and LOTS of bouldering. We've got access to cars/vans.

Some friends and myself were thinking about going there for spring break too. We'd appreciate any tips / opinions re: weather and suitability as a destination that time of year.

El Potrero Chico. Multi-pitch sport climbing up to 23 pitches and hard bouldering v6 and up. Cheap camping, cheap beer, cheap food, perfect weather.

North Carolina is nice.
Or there's the Red.
There's no climbing in Alabama or Georgia.

I'd definitely suggest Red River Gorge. Myself and a friend will be going there in mid-March as well for our spring break (march 14-18). We're from UTK if you're looking for people to climb with.

Not the Red! No bouldering, plus there will be 100000 other people on spring break there.

Its probably going to be wet in that area in march. Alabama has Horse Pens 40....its one of the stops on the Triple Crown Bouldering Comp. Spring Break I`d head to Hueco Tanks if you`re looking to do lots of bouldering. Yea it`s a good 17-20hr drive from Tn but quality bouldering, it should be warm, and it wont be as crowded a other areas during spring break

Don't pay attention to Hank. Everything here in the Potrero is peaceful and those that are here are having a blast climbing thousands of glorious feet every day.

March is very rainy in KY and WV, so the nice thing about the Red, is there is lots of overhanging terrain that you can climb when it's raining, however, you have to be able to climb overhanging terrain, and yes it will be crowded.

If you do plan on coming down to Potrero and joining the 100's of other climbers who have made the trip, I could use some American Spirit Lights.

The drive is totally simple. The first time anyone checked my passport was when I registered my car. We were waved through the checkpoint leaving Nuevo Laredo where the nice SUV's with mexican plates and chrome rims were being searched by Mexican Military. You don't drive through Monterrey.

The town of Hidalgo (2 miles down the hill from the camping)is more friendly than most american towns, and safe any time day or night.

The N.R.G. is my home base for climbing and march in WV can be chilly and wet. I would consider north carolina crags, ie.. linville gorge, moore's wall, or stn mtn. all quality area's!

A group of 6 of us are thinking of heading down all the way from North Dakota and Minnesota to check out RRG.

So I'm joining in here in the interest of finding out anything more I can about the conditions down there.

I'm heading to shelf road for half of spring break, the other half will be skiing in Steamboat and setting for a comp. The first two I can't wait for!

I just got back from the Red over spring break. It wasn't too crowded and even with two days of rain we still found plenty of dry climbing. We would also love to have you come to NC. Let me know if you get down here and we'll go climbing. There isn't much sport climbing here but there is a lot of trad and bouldering.

If you're really looking for good bouldering I'd recommend Rumbling Bald in NC. There is a ton of it, plut a lot of good trad and a lot of good sport from 5.12 up. Also quite a bit of bolted/mixed stuff 5.11 and under.

Camping won't be cheap but that time of year you might be able to get a good deal on a rental house if there are a few of you. It's right above Lake Lure. Check it out.

The Boone area also has amazing bouldering and a few sport areas... not as good sport as the Bald though.

Rumbling Bald is where it's at. Definitely my favorite place to climb.

So... if any of the folks chiming in on this post would want a partner next week, I've had some people bail on me and would love to climb with anyone around Western NC Monday or Tuesday March 14-15? I'm flexible for locations and am just as happy to lead or belay for anyone...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
