Planning on heading to Table Rock later this month. Interested in finding details out about the road closure to the picnic area. Any info would be appreciated. I saw somewhere that it doesn't open until April, but that was last years info. Is that standard for each year?

Pretty sure it was closed over Easter last year but don't know when it opened back

Call the ranger station. They know. 828.652.2144.

Yes, that is standard every year. The hike up that road is awful, but if TR is the beginner crag you are looking for, do it. Otherwise, go to Shortoff. Conditions are more likely to be better there, but it is definitely not a beginner crag. It is a wilderness cliff with a great deal of commitment, but possibly one of the best cliffs in the state.

I was up there last year towards the end of April and had to hike up the road. Crews were actually out clearing the road so it could be opened. We planned on using TR for warm up one day then hit the amphitheater the next day. We will have a fellow climber with us that we are trying to get used to the exposure before we head out west this summer.

That is a LONG hike if that road is closed. Hopefully we don't have any storms and ice like we did last year that caused that debri and slide. As far as exposure goes, Shortoff doesn't get any better in that category, plus there are 5.6's like the stuff in the Amphitheater, but with out the epic. Have fun either way.

I've hiked the road (march 08) and shortoff, and I think that Shortoff is a better bet

IF the weather gets a little warmer again you should be good to go on Shortoff MTN, but realize that the sun doesn't come around until late morning / early afternoon

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
