No problem. No harm done and no hard feelings. As it was pointed out, it's difficult to study collisions, because the forces involved, which are sometimes called impulsive forces, depend on many factors, and are very high, but last for very short times. They are also non constant in ways that are hard to predict. I made the assumption that the force was constant to keep things simple and because it was the most favorable assumption one can make to prove a low bound on forces, but in reality it does not work that way.

A great diversity of opinions here.

My rule of thumb:

If you have to ask, the answer is NO. If it crosses your mind, even once, the answer is NO. Physics aside, who wants to have such thoughts in the back of their mind when their partner is running it out?

Replace it.

For the 'gear paranoid' out there-

Seriously consider never owning, or riding in, a used car.

But if you must, at least back up the seatbelt with extra webbing.

My reverso, and other belay devices, have come to me after taking a fall. No problem for years. In my experience, you are much more at risk from an unsafe belayer than an unsafe belay device!

I will immediately be backing up the seatbelt in my '76 diesel Benz with 1" webbing.

seems to me if you put a bayonet facing every driver, accidents would drop dramatically

car seats for the little tykes not properly fastened should just explode after getting to so many mph

all airline passengers should be given a loaded .45 from the TSA upon boarding

and all unattended children should be given an espresso and a free puppy

Hey James,

Thanks for resurrecting a thread that we had all thought could finally RIP.

By the way, I decided not to use the Reverso. Firstly, my partner encouraged me to get a new one, and that was all I needed to hear. Keeping my partner (... and alive) is number one priority. That resolves the issue for me.

Your partner needs to grow a pair and learn metallurgy. But thanks for helping out the economy I guess.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
