John,
I have only made the tower for the past two seasons. So I am still experimenting, but I have a basic idea of what I am doing.
The construction of the tower is really simple. A garden hose is my water supply, and I have used a variety of nozzles to modify the flow and distribution of the water. My favorite so far is a soaker hose (looks like a standard hose but has many tiny holes), it is great because it puts out a mist that freezes quickly, and distributes the water over a larger surface area than a typical sprinker. I mount the nozzle or soaker hose on conduit that I push into the ground before it is frozen and turn the flow on very low (colder air temps and higher wind speed can accomodate higher flow). Once the tower is large enough to climb, I get to the top and bore out a hole using an ice screw, and put a 3/4" piece of conduit in the hole and start the process over.
If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them. If you build one next season it would be great to hear how it goes and what worked good for you. But till then we can settle for rock climbing!
