Was thinking about this today and was embarrassed to ask the guys at my home gym.
I understand that there are certifications, demographic's and geographic location that can affect pay just looking for a general idea.

You mean like manning the desk at the front and facilitating parties? Minimum wage if you're lucky. A lot of highschool and college age kids are willing to do that kind of stuff just to get a free membership.

It really just depends on the gym, but you are probably looking at $8-$12/hour tops.

Heard a guy at a local gym comment about it..."Hell, I practically get payed to climb..."

Can't argue with pay if thats what you're doing ;)

shows that my home gym pays about 32k a year for a assistant manager. I guess i was more looking at the people behind the scene seeing as i have a B.A. in Administration.

From my personal experience wall employees do not make much, but the work is pretty kush

Pro's: Pro deals, location (i live a 5 minute walk to the gym) pretty mellow work, cheap gear rentals, low stress, low work load, access to a very great outdoor adventure library, very reasonable bosses, hanging out with buds, meeting new climbers, being in the "industry", bosses understand that you can't work because you HAVE to ski or climb

Cons: get paid less than $8/hr, never get enough work even though the management keeps hiring new staff, have to be the bad guy when asking people to wear shoes and shirts along with not sitting down while belaying even though I don't believe those rules are keeping people safer, having to talk to coworkers when just trying to get my burn on

The whole I get paid to climb comment is pretty silly/arrogant. I can understand if less than 10 people are in the gym, but part of being an employee at a climbing wall is making sure people are being safe and always being available to what the customers need. If you are working a problem or climbing ropes you can not do this.

Granted this isn't from a level II route setter so take it as you will

Mattnorville hit the nail on the head, couldn't say it better myself. And the part about having to talk to coworkers extends to also the patrons. You become a face at the wall and good luck ever being able to just climb and train. Also since you've never really worked in a gym or attained the knowledge of what it really takes to manage one, it may be difficult to land an assistant manager position without having done your time in the barrel.

The comment I heard from the guy was at a small gym, there was maybe 5 customers there on a Saturday afternoon. Excluding myself and partner. At least 3 of whom obviously knew what they were doing/treated the gym like a second home, and I believe he was a route setter, so part of his job really is climbing.

It wasn't like a MetroRock gym or anything where there really is a large number of customers.

i've been paid anywhere from 8.25 to 18.50/hr to do various jobs at climbing gyms...not exactly an extremely profitable career. But thats not why we do it anyways

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
