Hey all, I currently live in Flagstaff Az but I am graduating this year from NAU and am looking for a cool town to get my masters in. I need some outdoor recreation, I'm pretty spoiled with 300 days a year of climbable weather here in AZ. What do you all think of Arcata Ca? is the climbing any good? I don't really like bouldering... but if that's all I can get on I will. What about mountain biking? any good there? any info you can give me would be awesome. The other 2 places I'm looking at are Idaho Falls, ID and Bozeman, Montana
thanks

Can't say I've been, but Nor Cal rules! Close to Yosemite, Tahoe rocks and mountain biking was invented Marin. Came here on vacation and stayed. You should to.

I had a close friend who went to school at Humboldt. Couldn't say enough goods things about the character of the town. She made it seem like it rained a fair amount though. Also keep in mind that any rock near the coast is going to be prone to the ocean breeze making the rock slick and greasy. Location couldn't be better depending on how far you are willing to travel.

i spent some time up there. it is hard to find dry rock most of the year.but most of the climbing is on the beach which makes for amazing scenery, and is fairly good

Arcata is a really relaxing and fun town and there is a fair amount of rock to climb relatively nearby. But it depends what sort of climbing you're looking for - all the really classic climbing areas are far away. 3.5 hrs to castle crags, 6.5 to Tahoe, 8.5 to Yosemite. Medford Oregon is a shorter drive from Yosemite. If you're happy with smaller crags and soggy weather then you'll be fine. On the other hand, there are endless places to go backpacking and mountain biking in the area.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
