We are going to be in Batu Caves January 30 to February 4 and were going to hit up some climbing at Batu Caves and Bukit Takun. Anyone been there and climbed or travel tips for Kuala Lumpur?

If anyone wants to join us we'll be in Boulder til January 12, Maimi/Keys/Ft Myers Jan 13-19, and LA area Jan 21 and 22. We'd be happy to meetup and talk about travels.

Cheers!
Ken

There is big wall climbing in Tioman, Malaysia if you are interested. Google Dragon's Horn. Good luck!

Good luck getting up this beast in 4 days, per your travel schedule. Don't be fooled by the size of the trees, it's at least 700m to the top.

Nice little blog on Malaysia there with a little info of what to really expect at Batu Caves and Bukit Takun. Sorry no big walls for us. I don't like pain and suffering on an international vacation just frustration of feeling fingers peel off giant holds of steep limestone.

I climbed at Batu caves one weekend in May 2005 when I was working in Singapore. We opted to stay in a hotel and took a taxi to the crag. It was cheaper and easier than camping and renting a car. We were able to buy local food right near the crags. Everything was dirt cheap.

There were several different climbing areas around the caves. However the different areas were spread out and not within easy walking distance. We found a decent amount of moderate climbs and enjoyed the weekend. The climbing was not worth traveling half way around the world, but it was fun since I was already in the area. The unfortunate thing I remember was garbage around the base of the climbs, including broken glass at one area. A rope bag would be helpful.

Let me know if there is something else in particular you want to know.

Hey thanks for the comment. Where did you stay? I've been researching but there are not many hotels near Batu Caves. I think we'd rather stay right near the climbing verses staying in the city center and worrying about commuter traffic.

Did you take the train up from Singapore? We are going to Singapore first and then planning to take the train.

Thanks

I took a bus up from Singapore and met up with 2 other climbers. We opted for a fancy hotel in the city. Honestly I think it was a 4 star hotel and we only paid about $65/night. Split 3 ways it was quite a bargain.

Things have likely changed quite a bit since I was there so there may be lodging options closer to the caves. Taxis were also very cheap so it only costs a few bucks to get there regardless of where you stay.

Have fun and bring lots of chalk. I remember sweating profusely while I was there. We missed the rain, but the humidity was always over 90%.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
