Hobbs! I haven't talked to you in forever. How are you?

Leave it to a Brit to be current on USA law. Nice catch.

I just wonder what kind of person offers to sell gear that they just bought from a stranger without seeing/inspecting first. What if it had been no good? Personally, I wouldn't buy used gear from someone that had admitted to never having seen it. I guess I'd start with the assumption that they were unscrupulous.

Evidence that the story by the would-be-middleman is a sham? Hmmm... asking what the seller can do to lower the price, then asking for super-fast shipping for extra $$$ because they are 'excited about the purchase...'

I had a problem at work where people were taking soda out of my office. Probably the cleaning crew. Security called it petty theft and said it was no big deal. My response to them was:
"Do you know what sort of person steals soda from a guy's office? Well, the same sort of person that steals anything else, of course. You have a thief in the building and you don't care?"

How does that relate? Well, what kind of person lies about small stuff? A liar. Yes, the same sort that lies about big stuff. Not trustworthy.

What I am saying here is that there are many shades of honesty, and also many people I wouldn't invite into my home. I prefer more honesty. Buying something and selling it at a profit is not a crime; supermarkets do it every day. But I find the false pretense and particulars of this situation somewhat damning.

Well, Lucky Charms dude was a tough act to follow. But had that story not broken, and this was a slow news week...

Meanwhile - To add fuel to the fire, I wonder if the person isn't simply trying to do damage control to their eBay Seller's account.

And something good has come out of it all. For those who buy on eBay or elsewhere, I suppose it is a reminder that the seller may just be a middleperson, and especially on items you want to know the history on - best to at least ask if they are the original owner or not.

Not correct--only "abusive" naked short selling is subject to penalties.

This is hilarious! Evan's post with the email address included raised some eyebrows, but given the damning evidence and the offender's ludicrous efforts to rationalize what she did, we're letting things roll merrily along.

Has anyone else noticed that Kalan/jeep1212 has responded to a couple of other parka for sale postings here? I wonder if there are corresponding listings on ebay for those parkas . . .

Ever notice it is impossible to find whoop-ass in the bottle these days . . . only in cans . . . this product you (Cindy and Mark) speak of I am unfamiliar with . . . does it come in cans?

Just curious would you still sell it to her for the $268?

Anyway, I think that you're all correct. This person is more of a hustler/greasball than a thief. I never thought she was a thief, but maybe that was missed construed by the title. I was just comparing the caught red handed aspect of the two situations. Lesson learned: Check join dates before considering transactions. Not everybody on MP is cool. Most people are cool. Thanks, Evan
The last purchase I made through MP I bought a Cinch for 40 bucks and the guy threw in an new locking biner and chalk bag and wished me a Merry Christmas! What a great group of people.

I bought a cloudveil jacket on Gear Trade, I also feared it may not fit properly because I am almost 6'3 and thin. The jacket was too short, you know what I did.. I sold it on ebay! I posted an auction and cut a deal with a guy to break dead even on the deal. I had my money back and the jacket out of my hands within a week. Everybody was happy. If this guy had any intention of trying on the jacket to see if it would fit theres no reason to post an auction ahead of time. Anybody spending 270 on a jacket can't be so strapped for cash that they need their money back, like, later that day if it doesn't fit. He is being deceptive to the MP seller and the EBAY purchasing public. No laws borken, definitely a jerk.

Yeah, I linked the for sale thread above in my last post. But did not see anything on ebay on the same id. Was curious, but not curious enough to spend more time searching.

Agree 100%. Exactly what I was thinking about when I said "I do not like the subterfuge though".

I login to send Evan an e-mail letting him know what happened with his giant coat and I find he posted this --an elementary cluster fuck -- without even knowing all the details! He’s got all this shit posted without even asking me what happened; nice job detective! I’m glad you spent you morning thinking up this shit. I didn’t “string you along”; rather, I just asked you a few questions that anyone interested in a parka would ask. Well, first off, let me just say that there are two (yes 2) people that use that e-mail address, a boy and a girl (me). We are not scammers, ebay pros, etc., we simply outdoor enthusiasts -- because think about it … I really want to scam you over a possible $20 profit on a old, used parka. We were just looking for a couple of nice parkas for some winter activities. The other person who uses this e-mail already bought one. I was still looking for one, and I saws Evans. I sent him a few e-mails about it, not sure if it would fit. So, yes, I was hoping that I could sell it if I didn’t fit me -- makes sense, right? -- selling things that don’t fit. I was going to buy the parka, try it on, and if it didn’t fit, it would already be listed on ebay, so I wouldn’t have to wait a week to sell it. Of course I would have taken a new picture and updated the description with my thoughts on the condition. If it fit, I would have just ended the auction. Should I have not used his picture and his similar description of the condition? Yes, I probably shouldn’t have. But who cares, he was getting what he was asking for his old, giant, used parka. This old thing has been listed for a while and no one has shown the slightest interest in it besides me (not to many 300lb climbers out there). Not a bad deal if you ask me. The worst case scenario is that he is gets $260 for the parka and I am stuck with an oversized parka that nobody wants on ebay. It’s not like I was asking him to ship it to the buyer of something. I was going to buy your jacket for what you were asking and if it didn’t fit me, I was just going to sell it. But sorry for using your similar description of the condition and your picture -- and nice job on the rant. I enjoyed reading you detective report. Very entertaining stuff! But now the rest of you know BOTH sides of the story (i.e., you are “educated”). So if cyber climbers choose to chastise me -- that’s okay -- at least you know what happened. And stay classy Evan!
HUH? What happens if Evan gets a full price cash offer and the buyer pays and walks out the door. Then in another part of the country another person hits "buy it now" on Ebay and completes the transaction?

The sellar cancels the auction with an excuse that the item was damaged on the way to the post office or some such.

Weird thing - on a similar note - saw a lady in a thrift shop using some fancy scanner to enter in books they sell for pennies. Apparently, they have this fancy virtual book store where they do basically the same thing online and sell for significant profits. They go buy the actual books once they get a buyer, though. She was very happy with the profits coming from her business.

Mark and I will def need to speak with our marketing director. Cans are soooo much easier to pack to the crag and can also double as an anchor piece.

PBR me!
