2011 climbing goals

This is a good topic for me as I've been thinking about this. As one of the first posters said, get stronger and avoid injuries! I've been battling a shoulder problem, which seems to be slowly resolving with yoga and specific exercises, but I can feel that it's not 100%. Gotta be careful.

Specific climbing goals:

1) Get back to easy/moderate 5.10 leading shape--trad and sport
2) Climb the Incredible Hulk with my best buddy
3) Be there for my wife as she gets more confident at leading again
4) Do that awesome 5.10a/b crack route on Cardinal Pinnacle

If I can get that under my belt as I stumble towards 50, I'll be a very happy camper. Most of it will depend on the shoulder. Be careful out there and keep is fun.

I only have a few goals this year, but they will all take a lot of work to attain so I'll be busy!

  • Road trip to Lander, WY for the climbing festival is a must!
  • Climb Devil's Tower, because it looks amazing
  • Send at least 20 trad leads 5.9 or above
  • Send at least 100 sport leads at 5.11+
  • Redpoint my first 5.12 sport

And most importantly:

  • Have a kickass time in 2011, and meet lots of good people

Lose ten pounds and keep it off.

Improve lock off strength.

One-armed pullup, maybe?

Use this here shiny new rack as much as possible. (Isn't it pretty?)

Log tons of miles on easy stuff, and get over the fear I've had since my fall last year, so I can have more fun climbing.

Dance more.

Drink more wine.

1. Climb as much as possible.

2. Find new boulders and formations.

3. Clean up areas and keep them looking nice.

4. Try to get people to stop talking about grades and take pride in their climbing.

The usual as far as wanting to climb harder. My major strategy to do so is to get on the climbs I want to send. Not a lot of moving parts to break on this one.

Other than that, a good road trip is high on the list. See some country, take my dog to new crags and ropes to piss on.

basically won't be climbing hard for probably 6 months or so due to a shoulder injury. meanwhile, my training consists of the 'thousand falls program', basically taking 1000 falls in the next 6 months. even started a spreadsheet and i am up to #48. basically trying to get to a point where i don't really think about falling and can focus more on climbing during the business section.

After essentially a year off due to a shoulder injury and being in the midst of the post surgical rehab, my goal is to get strong enough to climb again in 2011.

I'm interested to know more about the 1000 falls. Indoors, outdoors, deliberate or unexpected (and if the latter, how are you going about creating falls?), how long, etc?

How many ropes are you gonna need :) ?

charles, i do it mostly in the gym as it is easy to get a bunch in one session. i go up and whip onto one of the last 2 bolts. at first i would look down and make sure my belayer is paying attention, etc. now i am getting to where i am comfortable taking pretty big falls, say with the bolt a couple feet below my feet, without too much preparation.

i haven't been outside much lately, but i did get in a few slab falls, and i also took a fall onto an rp that i knew was really bad (but backed up). the RP held for a couple seconds but then pulled out. mostly i am getting over the fear of not being in control, more than anything.

To stay off of the MP.com forums.... starting now.

I hope to make a pilgrimage to J-Tree, light a candle at the base of Double Cross to honor the fallen, the nearly fallen, and those who would have fallen had it not been for the bolts. Oh yeah, and lead Double Cross without using the bolts that either are or are not there.

Double Plus 1!!!

To maintain the integrity of my newly reconstructed shoulder.

To feel no crippling fear on easy/moderate leads.

To stand atop peaks and be thankful for the journey.

Ski as much of the "Ring of Fire" in the PNW (Shasta, Rainer, Lassen, and so forth) as I can.

Ski more CO 14ers.

Climb as many super-mega-ultra-classic Sierra peaks as I can.

To find partners who share these goals and have good energy.

To never ever post in a political discussion again. (It's like putting lipstick on a pig, it doesn't look good and it annoys the pig.)

Snort! Oink!

EDIT: 2010 was a challenging year outside of climbing. For 2011, I'll revisit the my goals for 2010. Won't be onsite, but I'll work 'em and get 'em.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
