Kalymnos, Greece cost

Hello,

I need a sport climbing vacation to set my sights on in June. I know, far away.

However, I think Greece would be awesome! Does anyone know about how much it would cost for a couple weeks of sport climbing on the island? It looks like flights cost about $1200 a person. How much would the rest of it cost?

Who has been their recently and give me an idea about the cost of such a fun trip.

thanks in advance!

Hotels are reasonable - 30e/night.
Food is expensive - think LA costs and not much for dirtbag options.
Scooters are 11e/day but you won't need it everyday - just the further crags.
Booze - 4000e/day by my count but I lost track. The ouzo is cheap however.

May want to consider spring/fall instead of July though...

Was there in April 2006, so, I'll give you some prices from that trip, in euro.

Three of us split a studio for 30/night.

Dinner for two, swordfish, coffee, frappicino, beer: 23.

Dinner for two, meatballs, lamb, salad, garlic bread, crab salad, beer, wine, metaxa: 31.80.

Snack/dinner for two, octopus balls, greek coffee, bread and baked treats: 7.

Dinner for two, Kalyminos salad, wine, swordfish, beef stew: 23.

With a studio, you can get breakfast and lunch snacks at the local markets and just do that w/ coffee, etc, in the room. Water can be free if the spigot is running in town. Tasty water (no need to buy water).

One thing to watch for, is, have whatever lodging you book pick you up either at the airport or ferry terminal. The taxi's will rip you off if given any chance. If you book a taxi, make sure your lodging folks set it up and get the price squared away ahead of time.

We ate well every night. Could be done much cheaper by eating a small dinner, and, pre-dinner noshing in the room. Our room had a great deck with a table and chairs: perfect.

June might not be the cheap time to be there? Could also be hot.

You can walk to a number of spots to climb. As mentioned above, you'd only need a scooter for the days you wanted to extend your range. Easy for two to share a scooter. We paid 27 euro for three days.

Breakfast at the studio on Kalymnos

Cheers!

That's awesome. Thanks for the info.

I am trying to plan a trip with good climbing, someplace warm, with not long approaches that is affordable for two. Maybe under $3000 for the whole trip.

Do you all think that is possible? I know squamish or the valley is always fun and cheap but I will not be able to stand very long on my feety (ankle recovering from surgery) and thought steep sporty climbing would be nice. And I am going with a school teacher so it has to between june and August.

And I have been to thailand a couple times. Always an option, any idea on others?

thanks again for the greece info.It is much appreciated.

Brian, I just want to confirm; was the studio 30 total, = 10 per person with the three of you?

TK, If you decide to go somewhere else in the summer and would like to go to Kalymnos in the fall; I'm planning on going in October. I have some other friends very interested as well. If I can get a small group together to split cost on an apartment or studio, it will make things cheaper for everyone. So if that sounds like something you would be interested in, let me know. Otherwise, have fun wherever you go this summer.

You can probably do it for under $3k, but you'll be pushing it a little. Think about taking a boat from Athens to save on the extra flight, and get out of Athens quick as that place is expensive as hell. You can easily dirtbag your food by going to the local grocery store, which is fully stocked - no need to eat out every night. Definitely try to arrange your room ahead of time and have them pick you up at the dock. The climbing is awesome!

Yeah. Prices might have gone up a tad since 2006, though. I think as long as you're there in the climbing season, and, not the general (ie: expensive) tourist season, prices are pretty low.

My wife and i went to kalymnos oct 1-oct 17 2010 and spent less than 5g. Plane tickets were 1100 us from denver to atlanta to athens,we used kayak to book and picked delta airlines.Olympic flies direct to kalymnos for under 200 us.Cab ride from airport to massouri was 20 euro, never rented a scooter we split a 3 day car rental with another couple at 30 euro a day.We planned on staying at panoramitis studios for 20 euro a night but my wife hated it , i thought it was ok a little dumpy but what can you expect for 30 bucks a night in europe. My wife complained mgr dropped the price to 15 euro and offered us a better room but she still didntwant it. We ended up staying at the continental hotel for 30 euro a night. The rooms were smallish but very nice a great pool overlooking the sea and free breakfast. The breakfast buffet also had rolls and lunch meat making it easy and quick in the mornings.Hotel phloxenia? was where we wanted to stay [30 euro free breakfast]but was booked it was super nice and at the base of the grande grotta trail. Our rooms at both places had a fridge and cooktop no tv at panoramitis. We ate out once a day thanks to the hotel breakfast, something to consider.Dinner was running on average 50 euro for four of us with beers apps and higher end dishes.Pastastarted about 5 euro while seafood plates were 9 to 12 euro.Big beers ran 2 to 3 euros mixed vodka drinks were 7 but made 50% booze, yeee haww. A day in athens on the way to kaylmnos cost us 300 bucks and a day trip to turkey was about 150 us dollars .Getting to turkey is cheap about 25$ per person round trip.Bodrum though is a rich port- vacation town expensive if you let it.Overall we could have saved 1000$ if we tried more if we really dirt bagged it.One more thing we went at the start of the off season i think june will be peak so way more expensive.hope this helps

Hey I'm planning to be in Kalymnos May 25 for about two weeks on a world travels trip. Right now we are in Boulder til we set off on January 12. If you are interested we should meetup and talk. I also just got the new 2010 edition of the Kalymnos guidebook which you could checkout.

I believe some folks I have talked to stayed here for $66 a night with amazing views. Price list is online.
