Sorry, my bad i thought the details of where these were got posted. But it got deleted. These are up aspen grove in the primrose cirque. I was up there on my splitboard but the snow sucked. Itll take roughly an hour to an hour and a half to get to the routes from the aspen grove trail head. I was there morning and mid day and the routes rarely saw sunlight- if at all. With clear skies this week, we may get some good melt- freeze cycles up there. So the ice could go either way, fatten up or thin out.

I thought I recognized those.

Way to keep the tease going Dallen.

Funny, I did the same jaunt as you the day after:

Interesting to see how much stuff melted out in a single day. I didn't hike up to the fatter stuff, apparently.

I second that.

Hey Clay, my name is Clay Watson. What's your name? Just to avoid confusion as there aren't many Clay's around....

all the ice is gone from what was in the pictures. It is just too warm. Watched a ton of it fall off yesterday (Friday). We need to get some really cold temps for things to get going again.

I will be heading up there again tomorrow to look and hopefully climb some ice. That would be Friday 11-12-10

We were up there Saturday, November 13.

This picture is of the big gully right above primrose cirque.

We were just on a reconnaissance, but I will likely be back next week to climb it. If the weather stays cold, it should be in good condition.

Hiked up about 10 this morning and saw a small avalanche that came off a few drainages east of that formation. Big enough to bring some rocks down and do some damage though. Be careful out there.

Took a shot at the route pictured in this thread and under the right red line on 11/17. (wish i'd seen this pic before 11/17)

timp routes
After getting to the 2nd falls quickly on packed out trail the going got much tougher. Inverted, non supportable snowpack made for knee or deeper postholing we quickly realized we should not have left the skis in the car even though there was only about 2" on the ground at the trailhead.
Next mistake, never having been there before we missed the split to the trail that takes you into the cirque and stayed on the main Timp trail. Realizing this non to quickly we backtracked and found the right one. A while longer on the right trail got us a good view of a large crown on the apron adjacent to and below the route. It looked to be identical in slope angle and aspect as the terrain below the the route which we would need to cross. In addition the thing was in the sun all morning, below and impressive amount of avalanche producing terrain which isn't apparent in the photos on this thread, looked thinner than the 11/13 pic, and the going was only getting tougher.

We threw in the towel and climbed 2nd falls which was good for 25'.

There is more ice lookers left and higher into the cirque. Bring skis, don't get buried.

I'm not sure I understand this. A "split" in the trail that takes you into the cirque? The cirque is right on the "main trail." By "main trail" I mean the trail that thousands of people hike every summer to get to emerald lake/timp summit. What split are you talking about? Once you start out from the parking lot, you can follow the main trail all the way to this cirque.

I know that thousands of folks do follow the trail each summer and I'm sure that said trail is easier see when lined with people and not buried under snow. Like I mentioned I'd never hiked it before.
At the time and without a topo it seemed that after switching back above the falls that we we're traveling too far north and away from the cirque, not something we wanted to keep doing. Not sure what we got on. Maybe a social trail that short cut a switchback? Either way we F&^Ked it up because after looking a Topo more closely I see that the trail goes right past the base.
From the amount of snow on the sake at Sundance and in the parking lot I expected it to be a straight forward affair. Should have done a bit more research.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
