Urban Climbing in Denver
|
Hey, I currently go to school at UC Denver and live on campus and consequently dont have any money but have an insatiable appetite for climbing. I was wondering if there are any boulders in urban denver that are climbable, or any routes that are like that metolious or nicros add for the hueco roof holds where some guys had drilled and bolted a route on the underside of a bridge. I just want a fix that is close to invescoand wont set me back as much as a membership to Paradise. |

Hi Ted, |
|
Look carefully around Lodo and you'll find something. Old, brick buildings will give one hell of a crimp workout. Be careful though, I've been chased off before. UC Denver has a climbing wall in the fitness room. Look for stone buildings/walls. Again, be careful as I've been chased off and told to leave. |

Look for old churches and schools built from sandstone blocks. I think there's one around 49th and Zuni, its an arts studio now. Poke your head in and declare your intentions first and you have a better chance of not getting run. Also, catch a bus down to Thrillseekers (Broadway and Evans), Kevin charges less for bouldering only. Observatory Park used to practically be a destination spot (anybody remember Pat Adams getting to the top?), but they'll run your ass off of there now. Try Executive Tower downtown on a Sunday. |

On the spear blvd bike path there is an old stone wall, its actually right across the street from the campus. I get my fix on that thing when ever I can, its actually a great little workout, gets the hands strong. Bring a pad, its concrete under it. |

there are a couple sweet offwidths on some man made boulder things near the library on broadway, i think the southeast side. |

Observatory Park was great. Pat had that thing wired. I remember once watching him traverse the entry way, all on the fingers, legs dangling towards the stairs, 15 feet below. Dave Brashears also climbed there when I was really young punk. We use to ride our bikes there. They started throwing us off in 79 I believe. |

Bear Creek Park at Hampden and Sheridan has a wall with a decent traverse and a little V3 arete problem on it. Only problem is the place gets mobbed by kids-the wall faces south and gets good sun when it starts to get cold out. |

Climb as far at you're comfortable and climb down. There's also an offwidth around there. Not on wynkoop but the next street over. between 15th and 16th I believe. |

In the Commons park downtown there is a stone structure that is climbable. If you head north from confluence park towards the skate park on the bike path you will run into it. I am not sure what the structure is for but there is chalk all over it. Mostly crimps between the stones. One of the walls forms a twenty five foot arete that is slightly overhung. It's the wall on the left. |

I believe this photo use to be in Wilderness Exchange or on the Bittersweet companies website but somehow I found it again: dangpix.com/rock/index.html |
