WHuh?! di'n see this coming...

"Based on a true story, 127 Hours is a film about a young climber who becomes trapped in a remote canyon in Utah. James Franco is fantastic as the young, overly confident but endearing climber.

The film is superbly directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting). What could have been an overly dramatic, tedious tearjerker becomes, in Boyle’s hands, a gruesome yet humorous look at a young man’s will to survive.

Release Nov. 5; trailer and more at wired.com/underwire/2010/10…

Viewer be warned. It's way scary, in many wrong ways.

Yeah this has been in the making for a while. I really enjoyed Aaron's book, although I disagree with how he went about things. Reading his book you knew he was going to end up in some sh*t.

So from the trailer, I can see it's not true to the book at all. The whole point was he was alone and forgot to tell anyone where he was going...now he's with two hot chicks? Well it looks like a well filmed movie...I'll just pretend that it's not based on anything real.

Hollywood...

Scott, first he did mention hiking with two girls in his book. Yeah Aaron is not the sharpest tool, but that movie looks more entertaining than 70% of the other movies in theaters.

does anyone know if dumbass is seeing any money from this?

He has to be getting royalties.

I saw him speak last year at a conference and was actually impressed, he seemed to be humble and not the dumbass that I perceived him to be. He actually was quite honest about his cocky nature at the time of and after his accident and I came away with the impression that he had grown considerably since then. After the conference I went home and read his book, well tried to read his book I should say. It was dripping with ego in my opinion and turned me off within 25 pages. It was interesting though, because there was an obvious difference between the guy that wrote that book and the guy that I saw speak.

I would imagine almost dying, drinking your own urine then chopping off your arm does a lot to help put your life in perspective. I went to a show at Neptune's he did and wow he could talk..went on for like 2+ hours before I had to pull the plug.

Yeah I have mixed feelings about Aaron Ralston as well. I read his book a number of years ago, and remember being slightly bored with it as it seemed long winded. I certainly respect Aaron for growing as a person and find it interesting that people judge him so harshly sometimes. We've all done similar things whether we like to admit it or not. He just had a very unfortunate thing occur.

As to the movie. I have not seen it, yet I am excited to see it. From a cinematic standpoint, Danny Boyle has directed a number of good movies. So I expect this to be entertaining. I assume he may have hollywoodized things but um......its a movie not a documentary.

I just HATE it when people do that. I went to see this old guy talk at CU one time about climbing "back in the day", "desert towers", "the Titan" and some other crap. He went on for HOURS!! I missed the first 15 minutes of Two and a Half Men because of him!

Hahaha...comparing Layton Kor to Aaron...hmmmm let me think about that one!!

It wasn't a focused two hours...more like when your talking to a girl and they go on and on and on and on without ever making a point or digressing so you no longer know what you're talking about. He never even made it to the second half of his slideshow on the slot canyons which I was eager to see.

I don't understand the negativity towards Aaron. He seems like a great guy that's really psyched; made sacrifices to live a life that he found meaningful, found himself in a random, $hitty situation, and manned up in a big way to rescue himself.

I hope he collects some serious cash for this.

I should follow up to say that what happened in the canyon is a bad day, which can happen to any of us. I don't think anyone would have a problem with reporting a survival story as it happened; or making a movie of it. It happened; lessons learned from it are valuable.

But the guy has brought his stupidity to a whole other level to where other people have been hurt and almost killed in the mountains only to try and make himself look good. That's why he's considered nothing but a jackass to many of us. Maybe it's a good thing he started taking some humble pie to heart; but after hearing more crap on Denali and having other people potentially put their lives in his hands on Everest. Well, hopefully the guides that are solid on these mountains know better.

What was that saying in the Sanction -- he likes the title of leader as if that makes him one.

Hey mr. A, I agree with all your sentiments, and don't have much other insight/opinion on the fellow in question, but feel that this particular form of capitalization deserves a few moral guidances with respect to obvious exploitative potential of the lifestyle, environment, character etc. I know a bit about how licensing works, and he would have to have been creative (and probably price-cutting) to exercise much control, but I feel that in a way he 'owes' that much to himself, the setting of the incident, and the outdoor community. I almost want to compare it to the notorious Potter arch stunt, but that's not really accurate. It's just that watching the trailer gave me an instant sickness at heart, and the ensuing film will almost certainly denigrate and demean things further. Extra disillusioning 'cause Boyle has done some nifty work previously (and Ok, i'll undermine all this by admitting I'm a fan of The Beach from he and 'caprio). Ah well. Maybe we do need a hip new batch of conscientously extreme canyoners to 'youtube for wilderness'.

I just hope it comes out as good as 'Take it to the Limit' film did.

That's not at all what I took away from his book.
He did many very foolish and impetuous things that placed not only himself but others in harms way. It's one thing to endanger yourself but when your stupidity almost kills others ?

We may all do something foolish or dangerous on occasion but most learn from mistakes and those that don't suffer greatly.

Is there anything more telling than the fact he describes more than one partner who has no interest in doing anything with him, ever again ? Talk to some of those partners if you want a clearer picture.

You could totally tell in his book that a big fall was coming...he was caught in an avy and then later tried not to lose his hands due to frosbite by thrusting them in warm water after soling capital in winter.

Maybe if I listed all the stupid stuff I'd done it would be similar, but in my "opinion" (which doesn't mean jack) sooner or later his behavior was going to catch up to him.

I'm sure we all know people that we're almost watching and waiting for them to take the fall. Not that we want to see it, but they are playing a higher stakes game than others in a "not good way".

I don't know Ralston's share of this, but I made money off it. Sold some gear to the movie's props guy; he was looking to reassemble AR's mostly REI kit, and I had a few useful items. So there!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
