Forum "new post" indicators?

Howdy folks/admin's,

For some reason the post read/not-read indicators don't seem to work correctly for me. I can read every new post in a section and it won't change the yellow indicator to white. Same thing for posts within a topic. I can even log out and log back in and it won't change.

I should mention that when I log back in the next day that the indicators seem to update themselves.

What's the deal?

If it helps, I'm running Mac OSX 10.4.11 with Safari 3.1.1.

Thanks,

Allen

This happens to me and drives me nuts. It always makes me think there are new posts in the topic I just read.

Firefox on both Linux and Windows displays this behavior....

I use Firefox and IE, and the new post indicators work fine...?

Well, it won't go white for me.

I am clearly logged in, I just made a post so I know I read the topic...

Maybe I will try deleting the board cookies - won't hurt I suppose.

Rant: Forum software is like email clients - they all suck, some just suck less than others

Wow, you sure have a lot of pages open in Firefox.

Actually, the displayed behavior is correct. The yellow indicators aren't necessarily "unread posts", but are instead "new posts since your last visit". So in a particular session, they will remain yellow. If you come back in 10-15 minutes, they'll be white.

This still bothers me. The displayed behavior is counter-intuitive. I understand this is probably extra columns in the database and additional code, but other forum software behaves in this manner, including the software that provided the images (are they open-source?) that you are using for this forum....

Edit: I have been waiting for the forum indicators to change, but it's been over an hour.

Ah, the post indicator images seem to change when somebody posts. Again, not very intuitive if the forum you are interested in is not very busy.

Thought I would bump this again, instead of having to re-code the indicators, how about an addition common to forum software called "Mark topics read"?

This.

It should be in the forum software, just needs to be turned on?

I wish the forum software actually worked like this....

Bump.

In my experience it works like this:

The will remain yellow until you change web-page. Its not a indicator for what you have read it is an indicator for what is new since last time you logged in or first came to The Proj on that visit to the site. So in order for them to change you have to go to another site and come back or close your browser and reopen it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
