One year ago yesterday(July 5) I lost a friend. He was taken from us suddenly and at way too young an age. The last time I spent with John was on the driving range at the golf course in Bishop with he and his son, Tyrus. John pulled out a seven iron and told me he could hit the flag at the 150 yard mark. Sure enough, he did. Always confident, always capable. You are missed and always will be.

I was lucky enough to be one of the few that
attended John's show in Golden, CO the Friday, two
days before his departure. So Sad.

His memorial service was like no other and probably will never be matched. The influence John had was amazing...as evidenced by the service and the incredible respect every speaker had for him.

Here is a report on the memorial service started by Largo on Supertopo.com.

+1 for John and this photo of him on that climb inspired me to seek it and climb it... Hope his family is comforted in knowing he inspired so many.

Absolutely one of the best the ever was, and sorely missed. eMudock, thanks for the pics. The training log is classic so I've added it, and a tribute to JB, to my Workout From Hell chronicles:

I'd heard from a non-climber in the late 70s his name associated with soloing before I even really knew what rock climbing was. That's how well known he was even back then.

One thing I appreciated about John was that I can't climb worth a hoot and he didn't seem to care.

I remember talking to him on the phone about three weeks before he passed away and he was so excited about Layton Kor getting in touch with him. He acted like it was the highlight of his life. A generous guy too. I had a pair of Acopa JB's and when Layton saw them he tried them on and loved them...I told John that and he immediately sent Layton a pair free of charge, out of respect and admiration for Layton.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
