We saw multiple emergency vehicles heading towards the canyon this morning (6/17) around 10:30 am, then a flight for life helicopter. Anyone know what happened? Not sure if this was climbing related but regardless I hope everyone is okay.

The accident happened at the base of the Bomb. A climber starting up the West Overhang pulled off between 500 and 1000 lbs of rock that took a women that was getting ready to tie into a rope on the Bomb. She was swept down about 75 feet near the creek trail. I was climbing on Rain on the Bastille and was second or third to be at the scene. Myself, a park service employ and another climber from the Bastille area tried to keep her spine stable until rescuers arrived on scene. She was in the helicopter within 1 hour of the accident and probably sent to St Anthonys in Denver as it is a level 1 trauma center.

Afterwords we retrieved all of their gear and left it with the park service. There were many people that helped out and it was nice to see such a great response from our local rescue services.

Of note: There is still a large hollow rock on the West Overhang. The park service is aware and is planning to take care of it.

My thoughts go out the injured and the others involved with her group.

Regards, Dale

Just wanted to know if anyone from Boulder was planning on visiting the injured lady in the hospital. I know she probably has some relatives and loved ones doing that, but it would be a very nice gesture. It need not be a group.

I am hopefully getting together with a very nice young lady named Vanessa that just happens to be from Colorado Springs where I live. She got severely injured in a rock climbing accident last year and has now recovered enough to actually go climbing today. We are going to the same crag after work. During her stay at a rehab hospital in Philadelphia, I called her to lend support like several other strangers did. I'm pretty sure it helped her spirits.

In any case, everyone be careful out there and safe climbing.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
