Santa Fe/El Rito area climbing mid June/mid July

Planning a long weekend trip to NM sometime between mid June - early July. I'll be heading to the Santa Fe area to visit a friend, but would love to get some climbing it if it works out.

Is this a crazy time to climb in NM? likely it'll be hot, but I'm willing to get up early morning or go in the evening.

If you're interested in getting together for a day or 2 to get on the rock for sport climbs (5.9/5.11) or easy bouldering (V0-V3)... send a lil something my way.

thx

That is a fine time to climb, especially if you're willing to start early. The "monsoons" might have started by then, which will moderate the temps some. El Rito has various aspects, so finding shade shouldn't be hard. Given the fast melt off we're having, the stream might be gone by then, that's a nice place to hang in the middle of the day.

Wish I could join you, but if you want to get a beer in town afterward, drop me a line and I'll show you SF's watering holes.

I'm working and living for the summer in Los Alamos, just west of Santa Fe. I'm always down to go climbing after work (5pm+) or on weekends.

What Brian said about the monsoon season is true. It is supposed to get into full swing next week and usually lasts a month. Weather is mostly normal except for thunderstorm bursts that are strong and brief between 3:30-5:30ish.

El Rito is a nice full day location, as well as Diablo Canyon (probably the closest goood crag to Santa Fe), climbing at White Rock, and in the Jemez mountains. Diablo and White Rock have pretty much the same rock and features but El Rito is completely different and the Jemez are different yet again.

Unfortunately I don't know enough about the climbing around Taos to give you any good beta.

Cheers,
Josh

Not sure how long your here for but if you could make it to the jemez, thats a great spot. Its much cooler there than diablo, not sure why someone would tell you to go there. Its a winter crag, its WAY too hot there right now.

Hello,
I'm planning to go to all or part of a conference in Santa Fe that runs July 5 - July 23, and looking for people to climb with then. I actually want to plan the time I will be there to coincide with when I can find climbing partners for - so please let me know if your trip/climbing will coincide with July 5 - July 23. I've climbed in the area alot in previous Julys - lots at White Rock, Diablo Canyon - some also at El Rito and Las Conchas. I'm safety conscious, do both trad (up to 10d on good pro) and sport (will attempt up to 12b), and enjoy multipitch routes as well as cragging. I have a full rack & 70m rope which I'll bring - but won't have a car :( So I'd be dependent on other people for a ride to and from Santa Fe - in exchange however I'm happy to cover gas. I'm pretty flexible about what I climb - just would be happy to get out and climb in an area I don't get to often.

I know about the LASC TR sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings - happy to attend - just need a means to get there from Santa Fe.

If you are interested please contact me asap at greghueyccc _at_ cosmology.name or call me at home 626-396-9284. I need to decide what part of the three weeks of the conference I will attend & buy a plane ticket, so please let me know as soon as you can.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
