I and my gear have out grown my pack. I would like to purchase a small multi day and crag bag around 40L and a 100ducks. Any recommendations? I like the REI pinnacle any one try this bag?

You should check out Vaude's packs. I've had one for a year now and love it. They have this adjustable shoulder strap system so you don't have to figure out what size you need to order. Very reasonably priced too.

Osprey Variant. 28, 37, and 52L. Clean lines, but enough features to make it a great pack. the only annoying thing is the color: Pyro Red. kinda euro, i guess. As an all-around alpine/crag pack, the only thing that comes close is the CiloGear worksac. Neither would stand up to the rigors of climbing in Red Rock everyday, but for most places without serious abrasion issues, the aforementioned items will be great. If you hate bells and whistles, or want the most durability for the buck, buy a haulbag or the BD 50Caliber.

I have had the pinnacle for a couple years and I like it. Built in pick protectors for the ice axes. Like the full length side zip, 2 chambers in the brain and the little pocket on the waist belt. With the compression straps I have been able to distribute my loads well. I also add some straps to the top of the brain if I need extra storage. I broke one of the ice axe clips by stepping on it with a ski boot, REI fixed it for free. Other than that the pack has held up.

Cool just got back from rei on my lunch. I still like the pinnacle nice features plenty of room(I like a little small so i dont over pack)cool gear loop on the waist belt. Also looked at a kellty that fit the specs. looked alot tougher but was a little heavier. Cant wait to order I need it next week. Also dont think I need a haul bag yet because im still doing alot of single pitch stuff in my area. Im thinking of buying from rei so i can return it if it sucks or breaks.

Gregory Z55 is a great pack also, light, comfortable like no ones business and if you watch you can get it on sale for around your asking price. Gregory makes nice alpine packs also, same deal more burly.

Osprey Variant 37. A damn good all-round pack. It's really the only sack I've used and abused for the last 18 months and it's still standing up well to lots of regular abuse guiding and alpine climbing. I usually put as much weight in it as I can and then carry it around for most of a day and it's held up well.

Brian - You Must Get This Bag!

Mammut - Neon Gear
This puppy is sick - and gets a lot of attention anywhere it goes!

Trust me on this one, you wont be dissapointed.
It's a little pricey but soooo worth it...

(note if you need MORE space inside for a full trad rack, the top of the pack will carry a coiled rope)

ENJOY!

Brian,
REI is having their Anniversary Sale until the 31st of this month. There is a 20% off coupon for members on one item and they have several packs on sale right now including the Osprey Variant 52. I am only saying this because I was there yesterday looking at stuff.

I would have to agree about the Vaude packs they are normally pretty inexpensive and are really well made.

I personally have to many packs but my cilo gear pack is my goto pack for most things although my cragging pack is a Granite Gear Precipice that is over 15 years old and has taken a beating and I can't kill the thing.

I see alot of votes for the Ospery. Seems pretty sweet, I kindda like the talon 44. REI here I come just got the 20% off flyer in mail yesterday. BTW Black diamond caribiners 25% off as well as mammut ropes and harness.

Try to find a place that you can try on several. Most climbers haved bizarre body types. See what works for you.

Cilogear- good gear and well thought out(but for full disclosure, Graham is an old friend of mine).

Black Diamond (good packs for climbing). Simple, clean, everything you need, not much what you don't need. Probably best bang for your dollar if the fitting works for you.

Arcteryx, the Muira 50 makes a whole lotta sense for climbing. easy to get to EVERYTHING.

I also have an old A5/TNF micro-haul bag. While its not so compfy, it just won't die. I once watched a marmot try to chew on it for 30 minutes with no luck (5 yrs later you can't even tell). Think aboput the price in the long run.

For a good pack, chances you will spend quite a bit but when you find a good pack and it lasts 10-15 years, what you spend today will become trivial in the long run.

Lowe Alpine Airzone Centro 45+10 Adjustable Hiking Pack

This is the best $ i have ever spent on a pack. It is worth going to a shop and checking out. I can do a over night or a crag day with this pack. you can find them for around 120 if you look around. Well worth the bling!

Thanks everyone for the help. After trying a few packs I decided on the Osprey Kestrel 38. I put it to the test this weekend and it worked great. Averaged about five miles a day for three days with thirty to forty pounds of gear and no complaints. Carried all my camping gear perfectly and when it was time to climb it fit most of a trad rack, 2 harness, 2 pair of shoes, 1 rope, 1 helmet, water, and my smokes in a handy waist belt pocket. Very comfy and nice looking. Also had a great climbing trip. Yeah!

Best pack winner.

the cilogear just seems like a stuff sack so...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
