Ok.... So me and my brother are driving to Oregon from Florida this SUMMER.. I know, its far.. Anyways, we want to make a trip out of it. I want to know or hear of some of your classic routes that would be worthy to hit along the way. Our route is up through Georgia till we hit Nebraska (I know not much there), but then we would be hitting southern Wyoming/northern Colorado, northern Utah, Southern Idaho and the central Oregon. We are crack-whores (TRAD) at heart, but a classic is a classic, so all ideas are welcome. I would say up to 5.11.

we would obviously venture a little out of the way..

Cheers

Trad or sport? Then we can have a better idea of where to suggest.

Red Rive Gorge KY

Southern Illinois (Jackson Falls)

Devil's Lake WI

Rushmore/Needles SD

Devil's Tower WY

City of Rocks ID

Smith Rock and Trout Creek OR

Taking I-75 to I-74 to I-90 to I-84 might not be the most direct route (or that recommended by Google) but it will allow you to hit all of these areas with countless sub 5.11 classics. None of these areas are more than an hour off the interstate (except for your final destination of central oregon).

I'm sure others will disagree based on their affinities for particular areas, but I think this route allows you to hit the highest number of 'destination' or 'classic' areas with the least distance between any two areas.

Hope your planning goes well!

PS, bring lots of chalk... central Oregon gets a tad warm in the summer!

vedauwoo,wy then fremont canyon, wild iris, cirque of towers, rmnp,
independance pass, city of rocks, massacere rocks, the uintas has some good climbing, hell choose the elevation and U can climb all summer long comfortably. Watch out for thunder storms up high.

I guess there is a reason you are heading to Neb. first.. But if you have time I would do a less direct route and head farther south into Colorado then to So. Ut and down to Red Rocks Nev then to the Eastern Sierras, then head up from there...

If you can totally change your route and depending on weather, then I would take the 10 across and hit several places in Tx, NM, Az Nv and Ca then up from there... There is a lot of great summer (I.E. cooler temps)climbing in California worth the detour... Or you could save that trip for you way back home...

Sorry I am not including all the spots by name along the way but if you want I could fill in the details later...

By the way where in Fl do you live, I am in Ft Pierce... I have done a ton of climbing in the west (about 60 to 70 days each year since 2000)

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
