If my hybrid-ed snake-bite remedy won't work (see some previous post --- and your SO; I'm, uh, busy...); which it does relieve all pain, but, anyway:

use tweezers to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull steadily, not sharply/abruptly; they have barbs on their hypostome/mouth part, just keep a steady pressure on it. Don't use petroleum jelly, bitch-ass hot needle, nail polish, a match, lighter, etc etc.

And, don't squash a fat tick, else PETA will have you executed.

Soap & water the area after removal.
