How to stay strong when climbing is NOT an option

Was wondering if anyone would mind helping me out with a few workout ideas and ways to best keep my climbing strength and endurance up while not being able to get to a wall, crag or even gym.

I go to the Air Force Academy where we are resticted to base for months at a time and the only thing I have access to is a weight room, pool and treadmills and stuff. I have always LOATHED going to lift weights, but now that I have no other way to stay in shape for climbing I think that I may have to shift my mentality a bit.

Im looking for suggested workouts that can maximize my climbing-specific muscles and increase my endurance. Also, any help with supplements or whatever would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a ton in advance.

Blue Skies.

I would suggest buying a hang board.

There is always and option, you have chosen to commit your self to being in the air force. If climbing is so important to you, you should get out of the air force and not be part of the killing machine.

other wise suck it up and go to the gym like the other sheep who are in the the armed forces.

sorry that was mean but i think that you and the rest of the people in the armed forces have a better self worth then resorting to killing others.

Robin like the bird, that was weak sauce!

Scott, thank you. Good luck staying strong! Once you start climbing regularly again, you should be able to get your climbing ability and strength back within a few weeks.

call any of us sheep to our faces, not from across the internet nethers, and see how sheepish we are.

The kid (despite his choosing to go Chair Force) is willing to commit during wartime. He doesnt know where he will end up, and that takes some guts.

Eric Horsts "I hate to train" book as well.

Dont be one of those poges that thinks they can get out of uniform and act like an ass just because you are off campus. You live in a military town, you are never off post.

sorry, I did break the rules, and it is not going to win me anything now that I have spoken up, or get you all any closer to getting out of the killing machine that so many of you are in support of.

It just saddens me that there are so many people that are willing to give up their lives for a couple of rich f&&kers at the top who do not care about any of you.

I will just take my non-violent jerk butt away from this conversation.

Robin,

You're welcome for your freedoms and the ability to pursue your personal interests. Pretty sure none of us lay it out for the rich fu**ers at the top. We do it for you! Again, you're welcome.

Rock rings are good, the rubber doughnut hand exercisers that black Diamond sells are good, a slack line would be good for balance if you have a place to put it up. It might not hurt to develop a routine of core and upper body strength exercises (crunches, pushups, etc.) that you can do without going to the gym, for when time is really at a premium.

Thanks a ton for all the help and support. I really appreciate it.

Robin, unfortunately you aren't the first to sling inflammatory comments my way. I only off you the ideal that it was not my decision to serve so that you could exercise your right to free speech by saying "Hooray for America!"; I choose to serve so that you can exercise your American right to say and do things that I absolutely abhor.

Thanks again.

Robin,

The security and sovereignty of nations is a serious issue. Like it or not, a military will always be necessary to protect the interests of our country and whoever we want to stay our friends. Sure, we can and do get into some pretty messy political situations, but it's the politicians who make those decisions, not the grunts. Most of them work hard, sacrifice their interests (case in point), relationships, even family, sometimes even their lives to protect our nation and even me and you. If you were ever taken hostage overseas, there'd be 30 Marines ready to give it all to you save you, a complete stranger who trash talks the armed forces. It's true. Hate the machine, I can see that. But love our servicemen and women.

Yoga is also a good way to work on strength, flexibility and balance, but to get maximum benefit a good instructor is key until you know enough to have a good self practice.

Scott,

Check out the Stanley canyon trail on the west side of the Academy. Bouldering, short sport,a bit of trad, and TR's. All this is second hand info from some guys who threw up the bolts.
As for staying in shape, get a copy of Performance Rock climbing, Core Performance (by Mark Verstegen), and High Performance Sports Conditioning (Bill Foran et all). Read these, then sign up for the mtnathlete.com for awhile. Then take all the info and stuff it in a blender with lots of stuff you like and know that works for you. Then drink plenty of what comes out.

Good luck,
T

Geared more for alpinists, but these folks incoporate some intersting and effective exercises for developing functional strength. Much better than just "pumping iron".

Tenpins - not trying to start anything with ya, but in 19 years I've done 14 combat deployments....you can hardly call it a "chair force" anymore. :) Of course, it is job-specific. Robin - there are just no words for the idiocy you exude. Sounds like you go to Westboro Baptist Church, yeah? Scott- you're still young and will have plenty of time to get and stay strong again after this year. One season of less climbing isn't going to set you back too much at your age.
that was good natured inter service rivalry-ish talk. i sincerely applaud any and all who willingly enlist these past few years.

My old man is in the Air Force right now. When you see C-130's and C-5's landing on dirt strips in Afghanistan...I guess he oversees the building of those.

Anyway, does anyone know what A.R.M.Y stands for??

It is just my opinion that this type of thinking is what is responsible for events like the Nazi holocaust or the Pol Pot killing fields.

It saddens me that some share your confused ideas and think they are for peace when in actuality they are unwittingly supporting the most despicable types of violence.

I don't think you are a jerk, I just think you are very misguided. Don't be so hard on yourself.

:-)
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
