If you had to pick the most important piece of gear for any type of climbing, what would it be? Or, what piece of gear most defines climbing to non-climbers?

My brain, which says the last piece I placed is my most important piece of gear; at least until I place its replacement.

I'd have to agree with the brain walking by a piece of rock a non-climber wouldn't think twice whereas a climber automatically thinks: can I climb it?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
