Does anyone out there know how to get songs off an old Ipod onto a new one. Mac won't do it bc of copy write stuff. Any one out there ever have to go through this? Not really a climbing question but sometimes I like tunes at the crag, so it's kind of a climbing question. Any help would be great. Thanks Pools

A quick google search should help ya out. You have to basically show the hidden files then bring them over to your desktop. It's not terrible hard, just a bit of a pain and mildy time consuming.

As far as the copy rights, if you bought it on Itunes, then it's yours.

Do a search for "how to get songs off iPod". There are plenty of programs out there to help, but Apple continually tries to block the programs that allow you to do it easily so it matters on what system you're using (PC/Mac) and what version of iTunes you use.

I agree. On the other hand, if you're a Capitalist, why did you buy a product that you don't like? If people stopped buying Ipods for these reasons, I'm sure they would reconsider.

It's a fair point. Besides, in most cases I don't think it is "my data". I have all the music that I've ripped off CD on my hard-drive so I don't need to get it through my iPod. I don't use iTunes, but I'm assuming that when you buy songs you can save them to disk? If so, with the exception of a disk crash why would you need to get music off your iPod?

I've never purchased a song from Itunes, but my understanding is that you can save it, but you can only make a certain number of copies of it (five?).

Anyway, as has been stated, there is free software out there that will let you rip songs off an Ipod. Hopefully this software won't steal all of your personal information and send it to Nigeria while you're sleeping.

ah ha- you have the crazy impression that "buying" a "song" on iTunes means that you somehow own it. iTunes and many many other bits of digital technology operate on the service model where you're paying for the right to play the song under a certain set of conditions you agreed to by clicking that 'buy' button. Cell phones are great like this too... it's like being sold a shovel, but it comes in a safe and if you pay the monthly fee to open the safe you can use the digging feature.

a program called senuti - itunes backwards - should do the trick.

Think of this as sticking gum in the safe door then....
There is an easy(ish) way around the five computer license of Itunes. After buying your music, burn the songs to a disc (the license info/garbage will not be transferred to the file on the disc). Take the files off the disc and use them instead of the files you downloaded. Same thing as copying songs off a CD you bought...no restrictions on how many computers you want to use them on.

Yup, I didn't know that. Though I'd say that the source of that problem lies in iTunes more than the iPod. That easily addresses Mono's point, inasmuch as I have issues with some features of the iPod it is, in my opinion, the best out there and I'm willing to put up with them. However, I can easily go somewhere else to buy my music, and I play it on WinAmp - which is far, far, far superior to the iTunes player.

Hey I don't think that people from Nigeria would do that! They seem really nice. Just the other day I got an email from a Nigerian Prince wanting to share a lot of money with me. Would a thief be nice enough to share their money with a stranger? I think not!
