Hi all,
There is a job opening that I am thinking of applying in Athens, GA. But I am debating whether I would like to move there or not. How bad/good is it for a climber to live there? I am very unwilling to move to a place where it would be hard for me to climb regularly. specifically, how far are some good destinations? Is there a climbing community/is it easy to find partners? Is there a good gym to train?
Any info is appreciated.
thanks a lot
Deniz

My wife did a master's at UGA, so I was there a lot. There's a ton of climbing in the south, but none of it is particularly close. You can definitely be a weekend warrior, and there's a pretty good community, but if you're used to climbing daily it'll be harder. The gyms are in ATL, which is an annoying drive. That said if you like to drink, it doesn't get a lot better than Athens. I was there about a decade ago, things may have changed, you might try posting on seclimbers.org as well. Go dawgs!

There is a newish (~ 1 year old) gym in Athens. It is called Active Climbing and it is pretty good... this is a good spot for finding partners. Also, Mt. Yonah is exactly 1hr from my front door. Yonah has good multipitch slab, and a huge boulder field that is still being developed.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
